Turtleneck jumpers - is there a nack to them? Or is it a lost cause?

I've got a lovely new, cosy roll neck jumper. I'd hoped the neck would be a bit looser, like a cowl neck, but it's a proper turtleneck. I feel like a bellend in it 🫣

Can some people just not pull them off (I'm a bit jowly, maybe that's my issue?) Or am I just not used to it?

I have a turtleneck almost identical to yours. I find the neck confining and not flattering so I just give it a second roll down so it is lower on my neck.

SpanishSteps123Ole · 14/10/2022 18:22

The thing is, turtlenecks come in different styles and fabrics. Some are very high, some are slouchy, some are stiff fabric/tight knit.
The fact it's very thick and wide looks like a neck brace. I don't think this particular high neck is very forgiving maybe if you have dark hair and a very long neck with a slim lower face (triangle, heart shape, ovel)

Here are my suggestions which you are welcome to ignore:

  1. the colour: It might be your lighting or camera (or my screen) but it blends too much with your skin tone and washes you out. If you want beige find a different shade. I think a mushroom taupe one or one with more of a rosie/baby pink hue to it might look better.
  2. the turtleneck style: choose a shorter turtleneck in either a softer knit or a cowl style
  3. You could try rolling it again or opening it fully and then rerolling it on thirds so the height reduces a bit. You could stretch it by leaving it overnight with a large ball or a balloon or even a bowl in the neck area. Obviously only do this if you can't or won't return it for a refund as it may be stretched forever.
  4. see how it looks with your hair down, it might reduce the width of the turtleneck giving the illusion of a narrower neck and softening the definition of the jawline. Hair up really attracts the eye to the lines of the jaw so if it's not taut and with fabric (the turtleneck) right up there in a colour similar to your skin it's not the best look.

Thanks both, I appreciate your advice :)

I've re-rolled the neck, and it's better... but I think ultimately @SpanishSteps123Ole is right and the colour washes me out. I've noticed it with white hats, but was too excited about a Vinted bargain (£10, MaxMara, pure wool!) to care. I'll see if my sister wants it...

Have you tried rolling it inwards rather than outwards? I can’t stand a tight roll neck and for some reason the inwards method tends to be looser and give a better shape.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 14/10/2022 18:41

Ohh @Egginton29 an inwards double roll is even better! Thank you ☺️

The length when you rolled it down is so much better on you it makes your neck look longer, it's not swamping you. When I want or need to wear a colour that washes me out I go with stronger make up (brighter lipstick, more blusher) Sometimes I play with bronzer or CC as it can change your 'season' and open up other palettes. If the jumper feels good you could keep it for pottering around at home. It is a bargain!

I also don't get on with turtle necks, I look like Jabba the Hut in them. My neck just disappears altogether and I am just a head on a pile of wool.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/10/2022 18:45

The trick is to be a 5'10" size 10.

inheritanceshiteagain · 14/10/2022 18:47

pure wool is horribly itchy and the thought of a turtle neck for me would be excruciating.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 14/10/2022 18:48

I am 5'11! A size 12... but perhaps I look bigger in this outfit.

It's strange. I absolutely don't think all outfits should have to be flattering/slimming etc etc. but ultimately it's very hard to let go of.

That would give me terminal claustrophobia!

JaceLancs · 14/10/2022 19:00

You look much better in it than I would!
I hate the feel of things round my neck and they just make me look booby and dumpy
I can manage a lowish crew neck, wide cowl or roll neck and v or boat style

petshihtzu · 14/10/2022 19:20

I don't like turtle neck but funnel neck and high necks suit me better, as they show off a bit of my neck more. So many options 🤣

petshihtzu · 14/10/2022 19:20

Oh and 'mock' neck! 😸

ChilliPB · 14/10/2022 19:34

Haha I love roll necks! I’m tall and slim and they suit me, but I’d say the one you have the neck just looks a bit of an odd shape - too thick and high? It’s definitely not you, the shape of it just seems a bit off. Definitely looks better rolled down more in the later pics. I’d say try some more and see how you get on - I’ve got a few and they come up to different heights/some and more structured, some slouchy etc.

HorsingAround2022 · 14/10/2022 19:35

I have a jumper like this, it makes me look like a boiled egg in a cup

Verbena87 · 14/10/2022 19:44

you can dye pure wool as long as you do it on the hob in a pan and avoid any sudden changes of temperature. It takes colour really well.

Piffle11 · 14/10/2022 19:47

The lower neck style is much more flattering on you. I am 5' 7" and a size 12 and I have got quite a big chest, so no matter how hard I try, I always look dumpy in roll necks. I wear good supportive bras, but always managed to look as though my tits are around my waist.

largeprintagathachristie · 14/10/2022 22:46

I bought a basic ribbed roll neck from Uniqlo and the polo-neck is so long. Perhaps designed for more willowy necks than mine. I’m only 5ft2 and I need to roll it over three times to avoid looking strangled. But then a three-time roll looks bulky.

Only clocked this after taking the tags off, of course.

Housewife2010 · 15/10/2022 06:39

I don't think height matters re polo necks - it's more the length of your neck. My friend at 5 ft 5 has a long, very slender neck and always looks fabulous in them - she can wear a high chunky one and have miles of neck peering over the top. At the same height with a shorter, chunky neck I look awful.
