How to wear a silk scarf?

I've got a small stash of pretty large square scarves and a couple of thinner ones too.

If I wrap them round my neck or hair or head like a headband just look frumpy and often they fall out of my hair, don't stay in place - is there a knack?

Catwalk style seems to be to wrap it round the neck in a loose and elegant chic way but I never seem to tie it right. It's obviously more than just a tied knot, but how?

Do you have a photo of what you are trying to emulate? (I'm not being snarky here, it just might help a scarf wearer give useful advice).

This might help:

There are some great videos on YouTube and IG that can help!

Sorry for silence... wanted to find the picture that spurred me on to ask you lot.

Looking at this with fresh eyes it looks as though it's just a knot but when I tie my square scarves like this they look really flat and droopy. Maybe because mine aren't Chanel 😂

Spraying hairspray on your hair and letting it dry before using one in your hair is supposed to help. Don’t get the hairspray on your silk scarf though!

bigbeautifulmonster · 15/10/2022 20:32

Haha I was going to say...! 😮😂
Yeah hairspray on silk probably isn't the best idea.

I wonder why it helps... is it because it takes away the slippery factor a bit?

If round your head like a headband the scarf needs to cover the tops of your ears, it's less likely to slip around for some reason that way

Also I fold it and then place it so the crease is towards my face, and the folds are at the back, that way grips can be put inbetween the folds to hold it in place without them showing (I'm not explaining this well sorry)

That is just a knot. Unfortunately you're probably right about it being Chanel that makes the difference. I don't have Chanel scarves but I do have Hermès scarves. If Chanel is like Hermes it will be a much heavier silk and have rolled edges which give them body and weight. None of my non Hermès scarves sit the same way.

You're explaining it very well !

Try scarf rings. I have a huge collection of Hermes scarf rings of all shapes and sizes collected over the years and they're useful to avoid bulky knots

You can also purchase a band to wear underneath that grips the scarf and stops it from sliding if you prefer not to use hair grips. I have very smooth hair and silk scarves always slide off if I don't use this. I got mine in the US years ago but I'm sure you could find them online.

I find the issue with scarves is they're either headband, square - or freaking huge! I would like the large ones to be about two thirds of the length and breadth of whatever is normal.

failing that, I fancy a cravat.

OP, One hundred stars headband scarves are very good and don't fall off my child size head!

bigbeautifulmonster · 15/10/2022 22:35

@Heilalala is this the sort of thing? I searched for scarf hair grip and got mainly wig grips... same thing?

MaiTai's Picture book has lots of ideas and tutorials to show you how to tie silk scarves.

Heilalala · 15/10/2022 23:12

@bigbeautifulmonster Yes, it's similar. Mine is about that wide but a natural colour. A bit like this:
