Shampoo & conditioner for 10yo?

MrsRoyKent · 13/10/2022 22:39

What hair products do your 10yos use?

My 10yo has very thick, coarse and fast growing hair that is manageable through conditioner. His skin tends towards dryness, and he still very much has ‘baby’ skin.

At the moment we’re still on the same brand we’ve used for years - L’Oreal Kids Strawberry separates - but it feels like it costs a small fortune to have a smaller bottle with a dancing strawberry on it…

Can anyone in the know tell me what the difference is between adult and kids hair products, and/or recommend me any alternatives? He’s quite keen to have a 2in1 if possible - we got him some (even more expensive) Child’s Farm stuff for school swimming lessons and liked how quick it was!

Thank you in advance!

Anyone? I posted at a silly hour, so suspect it’s got lost overnight.

My kids are 8 and 6 and just use adult shampoo and conditioner. The every day stuff I buy for myself.

Adult shampoo. Kerastase

FTM2022SS · 14/10/2022 21:16

From a quick Google it seems that kids and baby shampoo is purely less sulfates and neutral PH so it doesn't hurt their eyes! So as long as he is keeping the shampoo out of his eyes I think any adult decent brand would be fine for a 10 year old. It says 'adult' shampoo is normally fine from 8-10 years old! I'm not expert but maybe something like Sanex?

MrsRoyKent · 14/10/2022 21:23

Thank you. I know it sounded like a stupid question, but my personal experience is USELESS: I’ve got highly temperamental curly hair that has to be tamed with 400 bespoke products, and the husband is non-renaissance and basically uses shower gel!

Treseme (the blue one) and no need for conditioner, it is perfect without.

Pixiedust1234 · 14/10/2022 21:30

Take him to a supermarket and do a sniff test on own brand and cheaper ones like herbal essences. Some can smell a bit "girly". Then watch and see how his hair reacts to it, ie goes strawlike.

My DD13 has very thick curly hair (mixed race) I use American Cream conditioner on hers from Lush. It has lanolin in and the only conditioner that works and get tangles out. Shampoo I use body shop ginger for her, dry scalp, itchy so that keeps it at bay.

My mum thought this

10 years she refused to buy me conditioner for. I have thick coarse curly hair. I was bullied badly at school because it was a frizzy horrible mess. She frequently remarks on 'how much its changed and how much nicer it is now I've grown up'. No mum, that will be the conditioner...

Given the Ops son has thick coarse hair, conditioner is probably necessary

@Pumpkinsbeinghitbyfallingapples

I can't say for sure, just what we use. DD has horrible thick curly hair and treseme was a game changer.

I'm sorry but I'm not imagining it like your mum did. It works really well for us all. I used conditioner for a good 35 years before I found that.

Pumpkinsbeinghitbyfallingapples · 14/10/2022 23:38

horrible thick curly hair wow

Asda do an own brand childrens strawberry '3 in 1' shampoo. It's £1 and I use it on myself because I live the smell. It's a knock off of the L'Oréal kids one you talk of. I'm no sales person but it contains real strawberry extract.

MrsRoyKent · 15/10/2022 10:39

Thanks all! For reference my hair is also thick and curly, and I love it.

This is a good note, thanks! Will get this as a back up whilst we figure out a adult one that works for him!

I just want to clarity I wasn't meaning thick curly hair is horrible. DD has 'horrible thick curly hair' was really specific to our situation and not meant to be derogatory in any way. It was a flippant comment after years of fighting to untangle lots of matting in her hair. The thick cutely hair she has is actually beautiful when it's washed and brushed, the horrible part is my having to fight her to get it to that stage.

I apologise for not being clearer about that.

Curly hair can be a challenge! I’m glad you’ve found something that works for her.

I've used adult shampoo and conditioner (Kerastase) on DDs hair since she was about 3. Children's shampoos really aren't enough for some hair textures. Was a total game changer and her frizzy mop is lovely and silky now.
