Interview outfit help!

I've got an interview for an office job, which I think will need me to wear something quite smart but I've got no 'work clothes' except one silk shirt. Will it be enough to wear that and buy a skirt or should I get some kind of jacket? Or buy a dress instead? I don't want to spend too much, in case I don't get that job and end up working somewhere less 'formal'!

You do t need a jacket. If the shirt is smart, just pair it with a simple skirt and some shoes.

Albgo · 13/10/2022 18:53

You don't need a jacket!

MintJulia · 13/10/2022 18:56

Do you have a coat that you can put over the silk shirt and trousers?

No need for a jacket unless this job is with a very conservative company like an actuary or a solicitor. Keep it simple and comfortable. Black or blue trousers in your favourite style with your silk shirt.

What sort of industry/company

mintywinter · 13/10/2022 19:08

Thank you so much for these replies. Yes I've got a smart coat, so if I wear that with a blouse and skirt hopefully that'll do. It's a professional services role pocketvenuss

Sorry I should add it's support services/admin, but in that type of an office.

I like having a plain, non frilly dress, as it seems to be looked upon as smarter than separates, with or without a jacket. If you get the right size, cut and colour, you can wear it for smart or be more relaxed - and you're less likely to be caught out with coffee spills, buttons popping, zips undoing or a bit of premenstrual bloating making a waistband uncomfortable. Less thought involved in the morning as well - its just tights and pull the dress on, rather than ironing, planning whether top and bottom go together, etc.

mintywinter · 13/10/2022 19:48

I really like the idea of a dress. Any ideas or links? Don't want to spend more than £50 max.

Search M&S collection collared wrap midi dress. £35 for an easy win.

You don't need a jacket, a nice smart skirt long or short, or a dress, or trousers will be fine.

Good luck with the interview!

lannistunut · 13/10/2022 20:03

My last interview btw I wore smart linen trousers, flat shoes and a smartish top. I had a cardigan but it was too hot to wear it.

buggeredmyleg · 13/10/2022 20:03

Good luck op.

Skirt or trousers should be fine.

mintywinter · 13/10/2022 20:19

Thanks for the replies and the good luck wishes, very kind of everyone.

Yep skirt/ trousers and a blouse. Is it a tucked or out? A belt helps if tucked in.

Clean shoes that aren't worn to death and a nice leather handbag
