i think i'm having a midlife clothes crisis

went shopping today to find an outfit for a hen do (fist of the Second Wedding hen parties!)

ok, part of the problem may have been that the shops were stuffed with a mix of sales tat plus spring daywear, but i couldn't find anything that i even remotely liked

and really didn't identify with any of the shops

eg

oasis, warehouse, zara, mango, house of fraser therapy: too young and poor quality

hobbs, principles: too dull

karen millen: too wierd atm (tank top with built in frilly blouse, anyone?)

episode, jaeger, phase eight: too old and sensible

the only brand i even vaguely liked was whistles and they had nothing going-out-y

[grump]

is it just me, or is there a gap in the market? (37 yr olds who want to look their age but who aren't ready to give up on stylish clothes just yet???)

brimfull · 26/01/2008 20:04

so tutter on this thread (which you annoyingly never came back to) you were an apple ..or a brick, and now you're a column !

Pannacotta · 26/01/2008 20:09

Not only can Tutter not find herself a suitable top for a girls night out, she doesn't even know which body shape she is and needs me to tell her even though I have never met her
Not that I am bitter that she thought my link was dull or anything!!!
Off to eat my supper of grilled sea bream with tender stem broccoli!

janeite · 26/01/2008 20:18

I'm much older than you (42 in June) and I don't have any trouble shopping yet.

In UK I go to Jigsaw, Joseph, FatFace. In Belgium I go to Bellerose. In France to Sandro, Bérénice, Et Vous. For dressing up Marni and Prada.

Tutter · 26/01/2008 20:54

indeed, anna. when i lived in london i found it easier. i lived in richmond so had great shops like joseph and maxmara on my doorstep

i'm a provincial 37yo now. harder, imo

Tutter - when in UK I am in deepest darkest Kent in the middle of nowhere but the shops are still pretty good.

carmenelectra · 26/01/2008 21:42

Tutter,

Those dark jeans are lovely as is the teal top. I would wear both, so nice!

The tops panacotta suggested are nice and the ASOS one(love their stuff) is gorgeous and a great colour. I want to go shopping and go to the pub!

Have you got got a BANK store near you? They sell nice stuff and at Christmas when i was struggling to find a going out top anywhere, i got a nice Vera Modo one from there. Black sequinned.

Tutter · 26/01/2008 22:11

ok

have ordered 3 asos tops to try on at home (the plan being to return 2 )

also haev to mention to you all that that US site i linked to (revolve clothing) is free shipping so well worth a look for jeans etc

OP posts:
Cappuccino · 26/01/2008 22:13

don't you have to pay all customs charges and that from the US?

I didn't buy a painting from etsy because I couldn't understand it

swedishmum · 26/01/2008 22:52

Anna8888 could you please point me towards these lovely shops in deepest Kent as this is where I have lived for 10 years and I'm still searching...

Anna8888 · 27/01/2008 10:31

swedishmum - I go shopping in Tenterden (Forrest next to Waitrose, Elizabeth Rose which is targeted at older ladies but has great shoes and sweaters, otherwise lots of high street shops including FatFace) and Cranbrook (shoes - think the shop is called Seven? and a bunch of boutiques) mostly, with the odd outing to Tunbridge Wells, where there are absolutely loads of shops inc Jigsaw, lots of stuff in Fenwicks.

CaptainCod · 27/01/2008 14:37
