How to fix dodgy hair dye job?

My hair is naturally strawberry blonde, I hadn't dyed it in about a year so had darker strawberry blonde roots and slightly lighter ginger ends. Finally decided to do a home dye job and made the mistake of choosing a different colour. I usually go for intense copper mango and haven't had many issues over the past 10 years of being this colour.

I chose the below colour and it has turned an awful sludgy brown/purple colour! It looks bloody awful. It's a semi permanent dye (thank god!) but is there anything I can do to try and fix it?! I'm pale and do NOT suit dark hair. I so badly want to get my usual colour and see if that helps but I've never dyed dark hair to orange and I've a good feeling it won't work at all.

Any suggestions other than shave my head? Sorry not the best picture of my hair, it looks a lot darker in person. I read the reviews for the dye AFTER I had my own disaster and there are loads of people complaining about the same thing 😔

If you wash your hairs with Fairy Liquid the dye will wash out much quicker, hopefully only a few days. Make sure you condition it tons in between tho as it really dries your hair out. Good luck!

As it's a semi permanent it will fade.

Head & shoulders shampoo can help colour fade faster.
You can buy colour removers but they're usually for permanent colour.

Coal tar type shampoo for dandruff - vosene really strips colour.

I would recommend clarifying shampoo rather than washing up liquid etc. I’ve also been told that hot oil treatments can strip colour. I used to use a product called Sassoon Magic Off but it’s only available in salons now, but it’s basically vitamin c powder mixed with castor oil, this would definitely remove a lot of the dye. You can but vit C powder from health shops. It doesn’t look that dark in photo. Salt water wash /rinse will also strip colour but will dry the hair

Thank you for the suggestions. Last night I tried washing with a combo of Head and Shoulders and bicarb, and then multiple washing with fairy liquid because those were the only things I had in. Then slept with it covered in conditioner. Today, still the same colour 😤

I've attached a picture of it in natural light. It's not AS bad as I thought it was last night, but it's not me. I'm a proud ginge not a brunette!!

I think it looks a lovely colour! It will fade if semi permanent- I wouldn't mess around trying to get it out as your hair surely won't thank you.

LucyLoopyLu · 09/10/2022 12:33

Is the colour even all over your hair (roots roughly the same as ends)?

If so I would just wait for it to wash out eventually. Not ideal but it might not look so bad after a few washes.

If it's uneven and looks awful I would suck it up and go to a hairdresser for a colour correction (£££).

J0y · 09/10/2022 12:35

maybe go to hairdressers and get a couple of inches off the end and ask them to strip it. They have the right products.

J0y · 09/10/2022 12:37

You will get used to it though. I got my hair died darik brown (it's naturally lighter brown) and it shocked me at first.

Try wearing more bronzer and mix a bit of loreal bronze glow in to your foundation. I looked like wednesday addams with dark brown hair but it will fade! tweak your make up too, work with the darker hair.

orangeisthenewpuce · 09/10/2022 12:40

It's a lovely colour

I agree with this as it will fade and I’ve had my dark hair go very dark with a semi and just have to change make up slightly until it fades. I’m sure it’s not as bad as you think as this shade looks very pretty and even if you are a natural redhead with very fairy skin this could totally work, it’s not brunette, plus it’s autumn now and rich shades like this look more at home.

667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 09/10/2022 12:45

Meant to say eyebrows are the thing to get right so you don’t look washed out. Use a brow gel or get them dyed it will make a big difference. I would love my hair that colour it’s very rich dark red, but it doesn’t suit me

ouch321 · 09/10/2022 12:57

That shoulder shot- colour is rich and gorgeous

Keep it

OhBolloxx · 09/10/2022 13:21

Miraculously it doesn't seem to be patchy, when it fades a bit more I will definitely book an appointment to get my red done properly as she does a lovely colour but it just fades so quickly and I can't afford to keep on top of it.

This is the colour I usually get which is like my own colour but more vibrant

Hope this doesn’t sound patronising but it’s from years (40!) of experience of dyeing my hair at home, next time get a shade lighter than you think if it’s a new brand you are using , as it’s always easier sort out than going too dark. I think generally that most box dyes do come out darker than shown on box.

DeadbeatYoda · 09/10/2022 20:36

I have recently used a kit from Superdrug that strips the dye out. It should work for you because it's a darker shade you are trying to take off.
My hair went black ( from mid brown) and it did a good job of stripping the colour off. My hair was fine afterwards too.

JackieDaws · 09/10/2022 23:37

I've similar hair to you and I use the Casting in the Rich Honey shade. It's lighter than the Amber shade and doesn't have that weird almost purple tinge to it.

The Amber one does go lighter after about 5 washes though so not much of a need to go to a hairdresser to get it stripped.

cazcaz2 · 08/06/2025 11:42

Ive been using the (newer) garnier copper in the round tub- its great for a home dye.Never makes me too too dark or too ginge.😆

cazcaz2 · 14/09/2025 08:19

Oldest son still insists on calling me copper top or any other ginger/copper connotations when he has to send my birthday card by post. I bet it gives postman a right laugh.😬🙄
