Shampoo for oily hair

Bunnynames101 · 08/10/2022 14:49

I've always had a level of oily hair but since I've embraced my greying locks and stopped dying and also since I got covid a few months ago, it's been difficult to keep on top of even with washing daily.

Tresemme cleanse and replenish was working but they've now changed it and it's not keeping clean.

Can anyone recommend a shampoo for oily hair that really works without breaking the bank.

I'm not one for beauty products so all the fancy language is confusing me. I just want to feel clean.

Thanks in advance.

I have really oily hair and have found the lighter the shampoo the better. Condition the bits below your ears only and embrace dry shampoo! Honestly it’s magic stuff batisse is the dream!!
for just shampoo I use the L’Oréal dry clay or the Charles worthington everyday.

Alberto Balsam tea tree tingle, costs about £1 a bottle.

Also Body Shop Ginger but that is much more expensive.

Bunnynames101 · 08/10/2022 17:20

@Onekidnoclue I have stopped conditioning all together. Pre contracting covid I just did the ends.

I tried the elvive but after a couple of days, washing daily, it was still greasy after washing. Like it never did a thorough job so built up.

@user375242 I used the Alberto balsam before contracting covid. It's not a match for the oil anymore.

It's genuinely like my crown is a geyser and it just slicks up the back of my head.

I wish I had the confidence to shave it all off.

At £15 and a small bottle, it's not cheap but very effective:
Inkey Salicylic Acid Exfoliating Scalp Treatment 150ml

A cheaper option at £6-£9 depending on where you buy is this scrub but you use it as a shampoo and it really worked for me
Umberto Giannini Grow Scrub Scalp Scrub. My hair had so much volume at the roots they were uplifted and whereas normally my hair is greasy at the roots by the second day with this I was able to go 4 days. which is handy because I had my hair styled and wanted the blow out to last a bit. I didn't even use dry shampoo and it was good on day 4.
I washed it though because I love that fresh hair smell so I still wouldn't go more than 2 days without a hair wash but that's for another thread......

How do you get on with dry shampoo? For me it’s a life saver. I’d have to wash mine daily without it.

Bunnynames101 · 08/10/2022 19:26

@Onekidnoclue I'm still growing out some very dark dye so dry shampoo doesn't generally fo well yet. Hoping once it grows out a little more I might be able get on with it. But I think at the moment it wouldn't be enough. Maybe mid afternoon after a wash in the morning...

I wash in the morning then spray dry shampoo just before bed and the next morning is ok. It’s rubs in overnight so no white residue when you wake up. I’m very dark naturally and it looks awful if it just spray it on normally

Bunnynames101 · 09/10/2022 00:29

I definitely couldn't get away with 2 days. At the moment I wash in the morning, about 6.30-7 ish. If I don't tie it back it's started feeling greasy by about 2.30-3pm that same afternoon. But evening the back is just vile.

I've had bloods done recently as I've had a touch of long covid. All that was out of whack was slightly low VD, not unusual for a sun avoidant Yorkshire lass.

I like Palmer's Olive Oil formula shampoo.

I know it doesn't sound like it should suit oily hair! But it's cheap and curly girl friendly, causes zero build up and just seems to have this magic effect of letting my hair go longer between washes.

Bunnynames101 · 09/10/2022 02:08

@Mykono a quick Google shows me it's for dry hair. Mine is the opposite so I'll give that a miss. Curly hair is thirsty hair.

Alas my hair is limp and straight so grease just lingers.

Might just start using washing up liquid. It'll ruin my hair but it will be clean at least.

I use vosene, can normally get it from the £1 shop!

Australian Body Care Tea tree shampoo

Justdancinginthedark · 09/10/2022 03:38

I have tried loads of shampoos and keep going back to Herbal Essences Daily Detox.

Do you touch your hair a lot? That can make the hair get greasy quickly. If yes would tying it up and wearing a headband help?

I was going to say the same. Been using it years and tried various others in between but this always keeps my hair the freshest.

Do you double shampoo? If not this is a must for oily hair - shampooing once doesn’t full clean the hair so will easily feel greasy again quickly.

Twilightstarbright · 09/10/2022 07:01

I have greasy thin hair that’s wavy, delightful combination. I find you can get into a cycle of using something really harsh and then your scalp goes into overdrive to compensate.

The body shop ginger shampoo is great. I used daily for a week, then alternate days and now once a week with Alberto balsam in between 1-2 times depending on how much I exercise.

feathermucker · 09/10/2022 08:28

Tresemme do a scalp scrub (about £5ish) that I use.

The L'Oréal clay shampoo is great. Technique helps too, so when you're shampooing your scalp, don't use too much pressure directly onto scalp.

I know!! But after 20 years of buying shampoo for greasy hair this was an absolute game changer for me. Literally I've gone from washing it daily to every 4 days.

As @Twilightstarbright said, maybe it's allowed my hair to stop overcompensating and churning out more grease. I don't know. But, you've had lots of other less off-the-wall suggestions.

Ah! Just understood why my hair is greasy. Constantly touch it as an annoying habit.

Trixiebell06 · 09/10/2022 17:07

Ive always had greasy hair & try to use mild shampoos as some strip the hair of natural oils which consequently makes hair greasier
Sometimes I give conditioner a miss because if it’s not rinsed out thoroughly this also makes hair greasy . Some leave in conditioners applied to the ends works better especially if using hair dryers and straighteners

VanillaImpulse · 09/10/2022 17:26

Pantene clarifying shampoo used to be amazing for stripping the hair but alas is no longer available
