eBay or Vinted to sell?

Not exactly style and beauty but....

I used to sell loads of clothes on eBay, hassle-free, mainly Boden and other mid-range items, and got good prices, but it's changed and the buyer is more at risk of being scammed.

I have used Vinted a couple of times and it was okay, but I don't like the fixed price so much and get the feeling it's mainly for very cheap clothes.

I've some boots (Dune) that I've hardly worn (poor fit) and wonder where it's best to list them?

I want a reasonable price as they are like new.

I had some brand new suede ankle boots from dune that I sold on Vinted for about £25. But then I've also bought nearly new merino wool jumpers from all saints on there for about £12 and a dress from LK Bennett for £25. So I don't think it is just very cheap stuff. It depends on how you want to use it, I buy and sell, mostly buy using my Vinted balance and it works really well.

I sell only mid-range brands on there - goes quickly.

I've found that stuff doesn't sell very well on eBay these days. When I say 'well' I guess I mean the return isn't very good.
Have sold a few bits of Warehouse, M&S, Autograph stuff recently, excellent condition, but bids and final selling prices are low. I'd rather give them away to charity to be honest.
Maybe I'm not selling the right stuff though!

JuliaDorneys · 08/10/2022 08:04

Thanks. I don't buy- only very rarely and then it was things like handbags.

I think I will try eBay first for the boots, having had a look and seeing similar with a starting price of £25. I want that at least.

Ebay but use signed for delivery

Riverlee · 08/10/2022 08:39

I tend to advertise the items on all three - EBay, Vinted and local Facebook selling pages, and then delete the entry if they sell on the other platform. Takes a bit more work, though. One platform didn’t outshine the others in terms of number of items sold.

Riverlee · 08/10/2022 08:40

I think EBay isn’t what it used to be. People don’t use it as much and you don’t get so much frantic last minute buying as you used to do.

WTAFSomedays · 08/10/2022 08:47

Sorry - meant Vinted.

I've had quite a lot of success with Vinted recently, selling kids' and adults' clothes from the nicer end of the high street. There's an awful lot of crap on there, plus listings with crumpled pics and virtually no description (eg "red jumper" - I can see that, how big is it and what's it made of?!) so I think it's easy to stand out by taking a bit more care with your ad.

I have an evri drop off point at the end of my road which makes things very easy from that point of view.

JuliaDorneys · 08/10/2022 09:26

Thanks all. I am miles from a drop off point (live rural) but have a village post office which does mean R Mail so higher costs, but I don't want to have to drive to a drop off.

If you list on Vinted make sure you take off all the posting options you can't use as it automatically gives the buyer the option of all couriers.
I've sold a few bits on Vinted, I like it I find it much easier than eBay, but I do think the item prices are slightly lower. Although the buyer pays the listing fee and buyer protection so from a buyers point of view it usually works out not a lot cheaper.

FANTINE2 · 08/10/2022 10:57

I’ve had quite a lot of success at selling on Vinted. However, the In post option was added to my postage preferences without my knowledge, so I was basically forced to use it. Result, two items still not delivered after almost a month! Have been refunded for one of them, but I have no idea where it is!

KirstenBlest · 08/10/2022 11:40

Ebay. Send as 'Signed for' with Royal Mail. Word the description so that it covers you for anything that might get the buyer saying it's not as described.

I still get some buyers claiming that signed for items haven't been delivered, so keep the Post Office receipt for at least a month.

toomanyflapjacks · 08/10/2022 16:32

Whenever anyone's opted for Royal Mail on my Vinted sales, I've been given the option of collection from.my house - would that work for you, OP? You pay upfront and the money is added to what the buyer gives you.

TheLette · 08/10/2022 23:25

Vinted is good for buying and selling, just don't buy or sell anything high value or anything you absolutely need soon because Vinted will NOT help you if anything goes wrong. Like currently I'm waiting 3+ weeks for an autumn coat that hasn't been delivered yet and they want me to waste another 6 days waiting for this coat to turn up. Not much good to me when autumn is over. Anyway, I'm going to enjoy complaining to Trading Standards about this.

I've never had any issues selling or buying on ebay but agree that clothing doesn't sell hugely well or at all quickly- unless it's branded and new with tags, say.

I do an advanced search before selling to find what the item has previously sold for and use that as a baseline assumption, then use an online ebay fee calculator to decide whether it's really worth my while or would be better off going to charity. I always list as buy it now for the lowest price I'm happy with. Sometimes I get messages with offers which I've occasionally accepted for the sake of a few pounds.

DP passes the post office en route to work so there is no additional cost there and I only use recycled packaging from previous parcels to wrap things so no costs to add in that respect.

Generally unless I'm making roughly £10 or more on an item I don't bother. I used to leave things up until they sold and it can take months of trying to store it well, keep clean etc, which is all not worth it fo a few pounds and the obligation of having to get out to post it or pay petrol of you have to. If it doesn't sell within a month I drop the price once at the end or send offers to watchers just in case and then give up on it and give to charity if it doesn't sell.
