White Stuff

I went into a shop for the first time in years as I wanted to check out a jumper I'd seen online.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed. It was okay but not worth £65 when cashmere is available at JL for £75.

I think they went downhill ages ago compared to 15 years back when I oved everything they did.

I unsubscribed from their emails ages ago- so tired of them coming - but maybe with 20% some things are okay.

Anyone feel the same?

I find the quality really poor nowadays. I bought a jumper when they had 20% off over the weekend. It arrived yesterday and I'm sending it back. It was £65 and I can honestly say I've seen better quality in Asda for £15 or so.
I also find that a lot of it loses it's shape really quickly and just looks rag like. I have things that I bought from them about 10 years ago that are still going strong. They've really gone downhill.

JuliaDorneys · 07/10/2022 16:42

I wonder if it was the same jumper? A teal one kind of marled blues/ mohair type fabric? I tried it on and it was really thin and no way worth £65.

I generally like a lot of their items but the prices do seem very expensive. There's a cardigan I love the look of but it's something like £75 and made of acrylic/polyester so feels overpriced for that. I wish they did more wool/cotton/merino knitwear instead. I have a couple of dresses I wear a lot though and they feel good quality.

Nippynopnop · 07/10/2022 17:33

They have a nice coat at the moment, but it is polyester not wool, and at £165, a bit of a piss take. 😕

Yes, that sounds like the same one! 😀I was just honestly shocked at how rubbish it felt. Even with 20% off it just isn't worth it.

The asst was trying to sell it to me, saying she had it! I expect they way that to everyone whatever they try on.

I also hate the way they come to the changing rooms to see 'how you are getting on'.

I've never had this before in any shop!

I'm not a youngster- am in my late 40s- and I resent being pestered when I'm trying things on. What do they expect you to do- whip the curtain aside and stand there in your undies? Talk through the curtain?

This is not new! They have done it for years and it's clearly a policy they have.

I got some cords in the JL white stuff last week. I,'ve not shopped there before but thought they had some nice things. The JL own brand was quite dull in comparison. I did feel it needed the 20% off though.

I often pass a White Stuff retail outlet in town. I've picked up some lovely household decorative stuff. I take a picture of it in store then buy it on line from a wholesaler

No doubt this will drive them out of business long term but meanwhile ...

Silverstreaks · 08/10/2022 09:09

I flick through the catalogue when it drops through the door and occasionally look at the website but there is nothing that calls to me anymore. I don't think I've bought from them in years. The last purchase was a pair of leather brogues which were in the sale and are amazingly comfortable. They are overly reliant on thin jersey for tops and dresses and poly/acrylic for knit wear.

I've got a couple of long sleeved top/blouses that I've had for years. The fabric is not jersey, it's substantial and hangs properly.
I have wonderful dresses from years ago too. Thick fabrics and good colours.

Dismal offerings currently.

The prices are similar to Seasalt but not as good quality, I haven't shopped in there for years

TheFairyCaravan · 08/10/2022 09:15

I've got a beautiful coat from White Stuff. It was reduced from £140 to £20 a couple of years ago. It is much better quality than the coat I got in Top Shop that was £90

pompomdaisy · 08/10/2022 09:18

I don't entertain jumpers from WS as they go really bobbly.

AnnieCannyFrangipani · 08/10/2022 09:41

I love the idea of their cotton jersey shirts but the one I bought looks like a rag after just two gentle washes. The fabric has started to pill and it hangs limp.

Silverstreaks · 08/10/2022 09:48

@AnnieCannyFrangipani that's exactly the problem. You can make decent jersey that retains its shape and texture and at the price White Stuff are charging that's exactly what it should do. It's so floppy and unkempt looking.

AnnieCannyFrangipani · 08/10/2022 10:03

@Silverstreaks Floppy and unkempt looking describes my WS shirt exactly! Not the smarter alternative to my usual t shirts that I thought they'd be.

Oddsocks12 · 08/10/2022 10:06

I used to like White Stuff and they're very good at making the shops look pretty.

But I feel like a dishevelled mess when I wear their clothes. Even 2nd hand off ebay / vinted feels to expensive for the quality. Shapeless rags

Oddsocks12 · 08/10/2022 10:06

Too expensive*

Shellingbynight · 08/10/2022 10:40

I used to buy quite a lot of clothes from White Stuff, but I agree that in the past year or two they have gone down hill, both in terms of fabric and fit/styling. I've got WS trousers, tops and cardigans in the wardrobe from 5+ years ago which are far better quality. I rarely buy from them now.

Badger1970 · 08/10/2022 11:28

I was really delighted when I found them a couple of years ago, and I bought about 5 Olivia jumpers but my god, they've all gone horribly baggy and shapeless. You can't even roll/fold the sleeves up as they just unravel. And I bought a coat for £120 that I have to de-bobble with every wear.... it's been worn about 3 times and looks decidely "vintage" and not in a good way.

Their jeggings are initially very good but at £45 not a patch on the M & S ones for £22...

FivePotatoesHigh · 08/10/2022 11:32

They have some nice prints but ye gods everything is just so shapeless.
