How long can you realistically keep a lipstick?

You know how everything has a jar symbol on it now and a lipstick is meant to be binned after 12 months etc? Do you stick to that? I buy travel sized mascara and bin it every 6 months but that's about it. I've got a lipstick that's 3 years old is it realistic to think it's ok? Or is there going to be mould and stuff on it? They never used to have the jar symbols on.

I have make up that is more than 50 years old and lipsticks well over a decade old.

Riverlee · 05/10/2022 21:08

I use them until they run out, unless they start looking manky!

onlyconnect · 05/10/2022 21:09

I recently threw one away I'd had for 20 yrs. I didn't wear it very often obviously, but did occasionally.

thepriceoffish · 05/10/2022 21:09

I don't get why it tells us to throw it away is there less preservatives than in the old days maybe

Mine are years old

LubaLuca · 05/10/2022 21:10

I still have the one I wore on my wedding day, more than 20 years ago. I wear it every now and then still, it hasn't changed in texture or colour at all.

HorribleHerstory · 05/10/2022 21:11

no make up of mine has ever gone mouldy. Dried up and become unusable, sure. Mould, no.

5zeds · 05/10/2022 21:11

It’s oil so guess it could go rancid? I would throw it out if it smells or has gone gritty or my skin reacted to it, otherwise never throw it out.

KitchenSupper · 05/10/2022 21:12

I have some I remember buying with my babysitting money in the mid-90s. They seem fine, smell fine, work fine.

Attictroll · 05/10/2022 21:12

I know I have a lipstick which is 22 years old 😂 so basically I ignore it. Literally having worked in the beauty industry it is basically to protect them legally and encourage people to buy new

thepriceoffish · 05/10/2022 21:12

The lipstick in question is a charlotte tilbury from my wedding day. Still smells gorgeous.

I did wonder if it was a ploy. I have concealer that says 6 months! I'd have to use it instead of foundation to get through it all!

I'd only chuck a lipstick if it smelt funny or the colour changed. Hasn't happened yet.

Mrcpy · 05/10/2022 21:21

I’ve still got my wedding lipstick from 10 years ago. It’s a beautiful Dior and I’ll never throw it away 😂

Metabigot · 05/10/2022 21:27

After a year or two it feels manky to me probably just psychological but I don't like to use things after about the 2 year mark.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 05/10/2022 21:41

I have a lipstick that I still wear that I bought before my first son born 27 years ago. John Lewis Silver Line own brand.

Hotandbothereds · 05/10/2022 21:45

I’ve never taken any notice of dates on makeup or toiletries whatsoever, occasionally eyeshadows go weird so I throw them out, that’s about it.

I’ve got stuff that’s years old!

Oblomov22 · 05/10/2022 21:49

Don't think I've ever thrown anything out.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 05/10/2022 21:53

Years in my case. I'm still alive!

muchprefersummer · 05/10/2022 22:02

I've got lipsticks that my DSM gave me. They were her old ones and she gave them to me probably 20 years ago - they're still fine.

TattiePants · 05/10/2022 22:18

The only make up that I’m careful with dates is mascara. I have lipsticks, eyeshadows and powder that are 20+ years old and they’re fine. I had a sort out of my lipsticks recently and did throw one Clinique one out as it looked a bit sweaty and smelt funny but I no longer liked the colour.

PeloFondo · 05/10/2022 22:20

I only ditch stuff that smells funny, looks funny or has dried up. Basically like food Grin
Am funny with mascara and eyeliners, but I use those up quickly anyway

ColeensBoot · 05/10/2022 22:20

If you do get rid, you can drop off at some beauty places, instead of chucking them in the bin bin. Where they will lie in landfill for forever.

Boots and John Lewis do a beauty products return thing where you can drop them off.

And no of course they don't go off in a year! They are packed with preservatives and are mostly either wax, beeswax or petroleum or silicone. None of which go mouldy.

Sniff it, if it smells ok then it's ok.

Enjoy your lippy!

thepriceoffish · 05/10/2022 22:22

Thank you! I think ill start using it more instead of saving it for best :)

Definitely do! Everyday is your best day. Honestly it is.
