Help me find a warm coat for my artic honeymoon!

We’re going away in November to Norwegian artic where we will be going whale watching out at sea and (weather permitting) we’ll be husky sledding and northern light hunting.

I need a coat that will be suitable but am getting confused about what’s best. Ideally I want something that doesn’t look too hideous but at a size 18 and 5ft 3, I’m not sure that’s realistic.

Budget would be up to £300. Ideally I’d want a coat that would last for years.

Have you checked whether the places you are going provide coats / clothing?

Obviously you will need a coat anyway but it might not need to be as warm as you think.

You will need layers to wear under the coat.

I'd go to an actual shop and ask advice, a proper outdoor place that sells tents and camping gear.

You also might want to have a coat a size bigger than you actually are so that you have room for layers.

Oh and enjoy your honeymoon.

Congratulations!
I went whale watching in Iceland, god I've never ever been so cold before or since! It was the wind that did it. Amazing experience though.
As mentioned by another poster we were given jumpsuit style suits to put on over our clothes. Your head will be freezing so ear warmers or hat. I would vote for a lightweight puffa style coat. Have an awesome time.

North Face arctic parka but with merino base layers plus cashmere underneath.
they will probably give you clothes as well

DSGR · 01/10/2022 07:10

North face fleeces are also very good

BorisJohnsonsHair · 01/10/2022 07:20

Don't mean to be rude but it's ArCtic, not artic. An artic is a lorry.

MyCatsSlave · 01/10/2022 07:51

How about a Didriksons Erika with room for plenty of layers underneath. I went for Merino and cashmere layers. I went to the Arctic circle in late February/early March and the layers were so important especially when nipping in and out of coffee shops.
If it’s going to be very cold then good boots are essential. I took a pair of Sorrel Joan of Arctic and they kept my feet warm even at -25.
It might not be that cold in November though so definitely worth checking the average temperatures for when you are there.

sanityisamyth · 01/10/2022 07:57

Most lorries have heating. Not much of a honeymoon though!

Have a look at Icewear. They're an Icelandic brand who do various down fill coats and they're really great for the price.

66 North coats are even better but I think you'd need to get lucky in the sale.

jeaux90 · 01/10/2022 09:19

I did glacier skidoo's in Iceland, they gave us all in ones to wear but I've never been so cold in my life. Layer up!!

Merrill often so long very thick coats, I have one from a few years back.

skilpadde · 01/10/2022 10:42

Are you going to Tromsø?

When I was going on holiday to the Arctic circle, I bought most of my warm gear from Decathlon.

This jacket would be good - www.decathlon.co.uk/p/women-s-mountain-trekking-down-jacket-trek-900/_/R-p-144205?mc=8502893&c=PURPLE

For the whale-watching and sledding trips, you'll most likely be given a massive waterproof suit to go over your warm clothing. You may also be given boots for sledding.

Thanks everyone and sorry for the misspelling. There is clothing included for the activities but I always have this fear that there won’t be one to fit!

Likewise I tried on a North Face parka, the biggest size is a 16 and although it fit I wouldn’t have got a jumper underneath so it would have been no good.

I have Uniqlo heattech base layers already from another trip, will they be ok or do I need something more?

for the poster who asked, we’re flying to Tromso but it’s a spa on an island about 3 1/2hrs away.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this? www.outdoorgear.co.uk/Fjallraven-Womens-Nuuk-Parka-sku41113502.asp?gclid=CjwKCAjwvsqZBhAlEiwAqAHEldwMTmg0I3eqOyk04hXO3anjJIIdu5eDhd7f_lm3IK9CpRii-Xz09RoCWsoQAvD_BwE I like the style and the fact that it’s not as short as some of the others.

You said that very nicely!

Not really any need to comment, just to be snide. I have said sorry for the misspelling and am grateful to know my mistake. However, my meaning was clear and you aren’t even educating me, just laughing at someone who made a mistake.

The coat looks good to me, but I am not an expert.

BTW I use 'top cashback' and when I clicked the link you posted and it popped up as 8.25% cash back so if you are not already signed up it might be worth signing up.

I think it’s between the Nuuk or a Didrikson Erika.

Anyone have any opinions. I tried on lots yesterday but neither of these were available anywhere.
