Bad hair - please help

I'm 52 and peri-menopausal. On HRT. Have always had fine hair which is also greasy so needs washing daily if I want to wear it down. If I put it into a ponytail it'll be ok for a second day however that's a 'knocking round the house or going for a run' ponytail not a 'cute' ponytail. Tends to look quite chip pan by the end of the day.

As I'm getting older, it's getting thinner and lanker (is that a word?) plus when I wash/dry it, there's a lot coming out either in my hand or in the brush. I have a side parting, one length with a shorter bit at the front to frame my face and it just sits on my shoulders. Mid brown. Quite unremarkable really. I also wear glasses. So two questions:

  1. Can you recommend a styling range (shampoo, conditioner and some sort of goo) for me to use? I'm happy to pay a bit more as in the premium ranges you get in Boots.
  2. Shall I go short? Will I regret it because I wont have the 'just bung it in a ponytail' option. I'll also have to wash it every morning to look even half decent.

Would be grateful for your thoughts.

Could you post a pic? Obviously with face edited out 🙂

How long is your hair currently? Do you ever use dry shampoo? Have you had your iron, thyroid and vit D checked?

My hair sounds the same as yours, exactly the same issues. I have found that using Matrix Height Riser (very sparingly about an inch from the roots) as soon as I've blow dried it gives it a bit of oomph and I use Kitenest natural dry shampoo later on in the day (i.e. don't wait until its greasy, I always do it the night when I have washed it that morning- rather than the following morning as its kind of preventative) this gives me a vaguely respectable day 2.

I also found a blunt jaw length cut makes it look much chunkier than it is, when it gets down to my shoulders it feels wispy and crap.

Nioxin is your friend here, and I buy online from allbeauty so it's cheaper..... i think I got one from Amazon once and it wasn't the real stuff so be careful there. I think Boots sell it too?

It has honestly completely transformed my hair - I'm 51 and it was really thinning and oily. I use the shampoo and conditioner, and the thickening spray (used sparingly) when I blowdry which then oddly seems to give me a second day grease free.

I went a lot lot shorter with mine, and found a blunt cut bob made it look less sparse.

BarnetTroubles here's a pic. Bit windswept.

Dry shampoo is no good as my hair just goes flat to my head. Will def look into the other suggestions - thank you. Think a blunt bob is the way forward too.

Hmm tricky one. I'm not sure about a blunt bob. I think the ends need a trim and a deep conditioner, but honestly, your hair doesn't look bad.

You have quite a lot of baby hairs, so that's definitely a positive. Do you take any supplements?

dollyblack · 30/09/2022 14:51

try a powder dry shampoo and not a spray, it does give a bit of lift and less greasy.

it does mean your hair doesn’t feel nice but thats the trade off for me to get it to look ok.

AddictedtoCrunchies · 30/09/2022 15:58

BarnetTroubles I do but not necessarily for hair. I take EPO, Omega 3 and Calcium.

I would 100% recommend having a look at Kerastase. They do a wide range of hair products for all sorts of different hair concerns including thinning, dull etc. and they also have a hair diagnostic tool on their website to help you work out which products would suit your hair type best. it isn't cheap but my goodness it is excellent stuff and I won't be using anything else now I've found it!

I'd also recommend a collagen supplement - marine if you can get it (I use a brand called Kollo) It really strengthens and thickens hair.

SingingGoldfinch · 30/09/2022 16:31

Oh - and your hair definitely isn't bad! I think it probably just needs a bit of TLC. If you go for a bob then maybe think about more graduated than blunt as that would add volume.

squix · 30/09/2022 16:59

I take vitamin D and collagen (and Omega 3) and use Olaplex No 6 - the combination has made such a difference to my hair. Despite being 51 and post-menopausal my hair is better now than it has ever been

declutteringmymind · 30/09/2022 17:05

Could you pin it at the front on day 2 to give a bit of oomph? With a bit of dry shampoo?

AddictedtoCrunchies · 30/09/2022 17:16

Thank you all, lots to look into here.
