Flaky scalp help

My scalp is so dry. If I shake my hair the amount of flakes is unreal. Been using head and shoulders but it's getting worse. Any recommendations?

Oilatum shampoo works for me. Massage it in and leave it for a few minutes. Use it a couple of times a week to begin then you can alternate with kther gentle shampoos.

T gel and tar shampoo were OK for me, but I think they don't do tar any more. Oilatum works better for me.

If it gets painful and scabby you could go to the doctor for steroid lotion. But try the self care first. You don't want steroid on your skin as a first option and the docs don't want to see us until you've tried the over the counter stuff. I am sure others will have good recommendations on what works for them.

Ginger shampoo from the body shop

It's tricky as it depends what is causing it. I think mine is caused by bacteria/oil as it gets worse if I don't wash my hair at least every other day. This is keeping mine under control at present (have tried a lot of stuff)

Loreal used to be good but the one I liked got discontinued and I haven't found anything that good since.
I'm now using the Superdrug Trichology range.

I've posted this before but after trying every scalp product under the sun over about 20 years I eventually cracked it. L'Oréal Low Shampoo. It is non-foaming. It seems the foaming agent must have been the culprit for me but it took a lot of trial and error to figure that out.

You gave my sympathy , I get a flare up and it drives me insane . I will try the suggestions . The ginger shampoo did nothing for me but everyone is different .

TGel, its a coal tar so can be a bit smelly but really works. If it doesn't then go see your GP as you might have a fungal problem but they will advise coal tar shampoo first.

Is it flakey scalp or dandruff?
Some of the recommendations are for dandruff.
Coconut oil rubbed onto your scalp and left overnight is great for flakey scalp.

For soothing garnier have a range that has oats in it, is white with a pink lid. I use tgel for the actual flakes BUT after a while using this combination although my scalp is soothed my hair is horrifically dry so I have to use something moisturising

Oilatum shampoo is a good one to try, or aveeno.

Feckinlego · 29/09/2022 17:43

Thank you all, that's a big help. I'll try those suggestions.

Nizoral shampoo is great - it may be over-the-counter from a chemist's but is very good.

fuckthemail · 29/09/2022 20:13

Nizoral to sort worst of it, then Philip Kingsley flaky scalp, wash twice, dry hair with hairdryer after. Works for me
