Uniqlo down jackets?

I’m in need of a warm jacket for dog walking but also bike riding so doesn’t need to be too long. A bit a stretch would be a bonus.
I do feel the cold so something extra warm would be ideal.
If you own one I’d love an opinion, tia.

My son had one for school and the zip broke. I got him a superdry one and the sleeves are ripped where he’s walked into bushes, looks awful. I have another brand and the sleeve ripped on that too as well as where the dog jumped up and ripped the material with his claws.

Check the robustness of the outer material before you buy.

I really like mine and use it often in the autumn/spring, but they are not that robust as the previous poster said. They are great for layering with a more hard wearing outer coat, or for chucking on on their own to run some errands or go for a walk. If you are likely to go through trees/bushes or near anything that might catch in the fabric then it may tear. Also if your dog jumps up it could rip the fabric. They are lovely and warm though.

I love Uniqlo ultralight down. I've bought several in various styles over the years and never had any issues with quality, especially for the excellent price.

Be aware that the ultralight don’t wash or dry clean. And don’t try putting one in the machine - it destroys the padding.

Decathlon do a great real down puffer jacket which is much more affordable than fancy outdoor brands.

You can hand wash ultralight I believe

Teens have the Uniqlo gilets for dog walks etc and they rate them…dh has one of those ridiculous heated gilets which he bloody loves

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 29/09/2022 07:44

I've washed my UNIQLO down jacket in the machine a few times and it's been fine.

As a PP said, they're great for chilly autumn/spring mornings, but not a replacement for a winter coat on cold days, though they're great for layering. And as they're so light and roll up small, you can stick them in your bag for days when you're not sure what the weather's going to do.

SudocremOnEverything · 29/09/2022 07:46

I find mine just isn’t very warm. It’s a light jacket rather than anything that will
keep you all that warm in the cold.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/09/2022 07:48

Down jackets are quite delicate, and rarely waterproof or that windproof. Even those with waterproof outer fabrics are not waterproof around all the stitching for the baffles. Down is also very warm for bike riding.

There are so many excellent outdoor wear jackets available now that would be much better. If you want the "puffy" look, synthetic down is much more robust than natural down when wet. Go to somewhere like "Go Outdoors" or Decathlon, and see what they have.

I'm happy with mine. It's done 2 winters so far. I don't use it for hiking, only for city wear so it's fine for that. It's great for travelling as you can squish it down into a small package.

AmzingMazes · 29/09/2022 09:50

Thank you. It doesn’t sound like it’d be quite right. Warmth is a priority, water or at least shower proof but I’d like something I can move my arms about in. It probably doesn’t exist!

I have a mid length mid warmth coat that I bought 3 years ago. It was intended for those days when I needed warmth over style (although it’s a nice slim fitting version). Anyway - I couldn’t stop wearing it because it is so bloody warm. I bought an ultralight jacket for cool summer/early autumn/late spring. Again - it’s taken over all my more stylish but less warm jackets. Just bought a full length one but can’t decide whether to keep it or just continue with mid length. Both my kids have Uniqlo down jackets for winter. Can you tell I’m a fan?

AuntieMarys · 29/09/2022 10:14

I've got 5. They're fine for what I need them for.

Verite1 · 29/09/2022 10:16

Everyone saying not warm must be talking about ultralight! My winter one is mid warmth (can’t remember the name) and I’ve never been cold in it. There was an even warmer version on sale but it was very heavy. My DS winter one is ultralight and It would not be warm enough for me but it’s almost impossible to get him to wear a coat in winter and he really likes this one so it’s better than nothing.
