Does anyone else do this? Wishlists when you're avoiding shopping

I'm trying not to buy too many clothes. I love clothes, so this can sometimes be a challenge.

So lately, I've been making a little wishlist of things I might buy over the next six months to a year.

Does anyone else do the same and what is on yours? Just for fun and maybe inspiration. Also because I can't join in any shopping threads

Like you, I’m trying to buy fewer clothes. I have too many, but I love fashion 😳 I don’t have a wish list, but I have started to browse my favourite brands, put things in my ‘basket’, then sleep on it! 9 times out of 10, I don’t make a purchase in the end, so it a good strategy for me. I have been bitten by the Great British Sewing Bee bug since Jan ‘22, so make clothes for myself too 🤷‍♀️ I don’t need the clothes, but it’s great mindful practice and I try to stick with dead stock fabric that, if unsold would go into landfill. It’s great to choose the pattern and make the item in a carefully chosen fabric and print! That has also had the effect that I can legitimately look at new season clothes in my favourite brands for inspiration, then clutch my chest shouting ‘how much’? ‘I could make that at a third of the price’ 🙂

Yes, I sometimes do the wishlists on the sites where I would normally shop. Still get the thrill of adding to basket, without actually paying for it!

Making clothes sounds fun. I cannot and have never yet used a sewing machine! But it does sound fun.

Yes I have a wish list of purchases that I keep on Pinterest, I'm trying to lose weight and shape up so don't want to buy any clothes at my current size. (Plus funds are limited at the moment).

Not to be a bad influence, but when I've been on a health kick and not wanted to buy clothes, I've just bought shoes and bags 😁

Yes, I do. I think it helps me to avoid lots of impulse buys that I don't really want or need.

Although it's fair to say that I'm quite flexible with it, and sometimes things that I've seen sneak on to my wishlist and get bought almost straightaway.

That's not really cheating, right?...

Plantstrees · 27/09/2022 16:33

I create wishlists at shops I can't afford to shop at. It feels good to drop things into a basket but the total always terrifies me and I close the page! I think it stops me buying things.

PeloFondo · 27/09/2022 16:51

Oh god yes Grin mins is beauty/perfume/candles

So if I see something I like online/magazine/review, I add it to my notes app. Then if I see bad reviews, think it's overpriced or go off it, I delete it
My lists are... huge. When I use up say a candle I assess if I want to buy it again, if not then I pick one off my wish list and buy that

I had never used a sewing machine before February. I got someone to show me the basics of using it and I’m just learning as I go along with the help of YouTube🙂 Anyone can learn to sew. Everything I’ve made has a couple of flaws, but they’re not that noticeable and I’m improving. This is the first dress I made. I love it on a hot day.

Yes, definitely. Often it helps me plan what I do buy as I have noted what I like and then see something elsewhere that's even better so will buy that instead. I'm also trying to get better at waiting for good offers before buying, that's just worked well for me this week with two of my favourite brands having 20% off.

I also love looking at paper catalogues - the Seasalt ones are my favourites now most brands have stopped sending them.

Ooooo i love it! You are cute as a button in that.

Some very organised lists on here. Will have to get a spreadsheet or something

This listing method is appealing to my two loves; clothes and lists/organising 🤓

Well I can’t buy any for a few weeks. I need to reign it in.

EllietheElephanti · 27/09/2022 20:18

I have started a wish list of things I want (not just clothes) so I can make a bit more of an informed decision about what o want to buy eg look at the list and buy one thing when I have spare money rather than just spending.

SuzySangfroid · 27/09/2022 20:31

@PreColumbian yes, same. I just took six huge bags of clothes and shoes to charity. I can't gather up that many things again. Vinted was my weakness over the summer and I need to admit to myself that a lot of my 'bargains' weren't in fact bargains at all since a lot have just been donated. I did keep one, very stunning dress though, so not all bad

@EllietheElephanti I might to the same. Makes me feel less hard done by 😅

@AnnieSnap That's great! Did you use a pattern? Does it pull over your head or is there a zip?

I've managed to teach myself to use a machine but can't work patterns out at all!

TheOGCCL · 27/09/2022 20:56

I do this but often find items out of stock or removed entirely when I go back. That’s fast fashion I guess.

I used this pattern. shop.tillyandthebuttons.com/collections/sewingpatterns/products/skye It’s designed to be doable by beginners. I recommend you search independent patterns as they have more detailed instructions. Often there are reviews and sometimes even sewing tutorials for specific patterns on YouTube. Try thefoldline.com for patterns, select beginner and independent. If I can help, feel free to message me.

The dress has no fastenings and does just pull over the head.
