Would you hand wash a cotton jumper?

I've just bought this www.johnlewis.com/weekend-maxmara-pirania-cotton-knit-pattern-jumper-ivory-multi/p5846247 jumper, second hand off Vinted.

The washing instructions say hand wash only... but it's 100% cotton and I'd much rather be able to bung it in the washing machine. Do you think it'll just shrink a bit (not a disaster, it's quite big) or will it be ruined?

Do you have a hand wash setting on the machine?

Beebumble2 · 26/09/2022 09:16

I would hand wash it. Cotton has poor elasticity when loose knitted and the motion of the machine might mishaps the jumper for ever.
Hand wash in a mild soap ( delicate washing liquid) gently squeeze the water out. Lay it on a towel and roll up like a Swiss roll. Then dry flat.
A bit of a pain, which is why my thick white cotton jumper has rarely been worn!

I've got a delicates setting... but maybe @Beebumble2 is right, I should just hand wash (at least to start with..)

Thank you

If you're worried about stretch garments there's net zip up bags for this.

scrufffy · 26/09/2022 09:36

I would put it in a net bag and use the hand wash setting on the machine with a gentle detergent. Life is too short to hand wash!

MrJi · 26/09/2022 09:41

Depends on your machine. If you have a really good wool cycle use that. Cotton jumpers are heavy when wet, so easily pulled out of shape. Gently re-shape when you take it out of the machine, and dry flat if possible.

Pigtailsandall · 26/09/2022 15:03

I just use wool cycle, low spin and have a million zip bags for items like this. If it doesn't tolerate the washing machine it's too high maintenance for me!

I would wash it on a 30 degree dedicates.

I would use delicate or wool cycle but set to cold and probably no spin.

I put so many things in netbags !
Bras (padded bags more to protect the machine )
Socks so I don't lose one ) a bag for each person, much easier ti hang up than a pile of damp black socks)
Jumpers -all types , so the arms don;t get stretched
Anything with sequins

I'd do a gentle wash in a net bag , no issues

dementedpixie · 26/09/2022 20:32

I also find if you put a washing pod thing in a net bag it doesn't travel to the front of the machine and get stuck in the door seal.

I use them for small socks, bras and tops with sequins or beads on them

lannistunut · 26/09/2022 20:41

I would use the delicate setting but no would not handwash as it is spinning that is the issue.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 26/09/2022 21:20

Right, looks like it's time for me to invest in some washing bags!
