Hello

Another MN passed this to me - I have my own business selling diamond engagement rings online www.samarajames.com.

motherhurdcure is right - get a certificate! But a certificate isn't a guarantee it will be good.

You need to look at

  1. the cut of the diamond is most important (very good or excellent or Ideal only). Some jewellers will try to fob you off with telling you the shape (i.e round!)

  2. Clarity - Minimum SI, VS, or top quality VVS or IF (explanation below)

  3. Colour - D, E, F or G (diamonds are colour graded from D- colourless to Z- yellow

  4. Size - go with what you can afford but the bigger the better !

  5. Metal - if you are spending £1000+ go for Platinum as it is a harder, more durable, metal. If you go for White Gold just remember it will need re-plating every so often - White gold is naturally grey and is rhodium plated to make it 'white'

  6. Fluoresence - None, Nil or Faint NOT Medium or Strong

Please do call me on 0800 612 2721 / email or ask here if you want any help - I'm happy to give you or any MN-er advice - even if you don't plan to buy from us! But I can guarantee you will love our quality and we offer lowest prices in the UK.

Hope you have great fun choosing!

I = Visible Inclusions
SI = Small Inclusions not visible to the naked Eye
VS = Very Small Inclusions
VVS = Very Very Small Inclusions
IF = Internally Flawless

PS motherhurdcure I sell 'D' colour on the internet - certified and genuine!

It's not quite "internet shopping", but I had my engagement ring (diamond bought in SA) set here, and their prices were great, even compared to Cape Town prices. They also made our wedding rings and diamond earrings for me, and diamond cufflinks for DH.

I think they can offer a phone/ ordering service. Their pricelist of diamonds in stock is online, but they can get whatever you need. I have recommended them to various people, all of whom have been impressed by quality and service.

There are a couple of very good sites for buying diamonds. The best (certainly considered by the diamond trade) is www.bluenile.com An American site, but you can buy from the UK. A friend bought a diamond from there a couple of years ago, and got an excellent deal. There is even a system of being able to 'build your own ring', choosing size of stone, style of shank, setting etc. The majority of their stones are certified too, so you know what you're getting.

Certainly BlueNile have a range of D IF stones which are GIA certified (Gemological Institute of America - one of the forefront gem testing laboratories in the world whose certificates are very much trusted in the trade).

Alternatively, if you are looking for a solely British site, have a look at www.holtsdiamonds.com They have a store in Hatton Garden, so you can have a look at what they have in stock online, reserve something, and then come up and have a look. My engagement ring came from Holts, and I cannot praise them, or their service, highly enough.
