Giving hairdresser free reign

Has anyone ever actually done this?

I have shoulder length thin hair, balyage but I'm just over it and would like a change but no idea what or what would suit me. I'd love to go in and ask my hairdresser to do whatever they think but would they hate that?

That's all I ever do! I just let her do what she fancies, it's been twenty years now and I've never been unhappy with my hair.

I do this at least twice a year but I trust my hairdresser and have been going to her for years so she knows what colours and style I suit and what I can cope with. It’s fun but only if the trust is there

I did. I got an undercut and I bloody love it. Did it just before one of the lockdowns though so I knew I had time to grow it out if it was awful!

I did this and hated it, but it was with a new hairdresser so my error entirely. However I have very fine hair, shoulder length hair with balyage usually and I think there is a reason that's why my old hairdresser always stuck to that formula. I was disappointed, but took it on the chin as it was my fault. I'd say in first instance know the hairdresser well and it you don't like the results then blame yourself.

Thank you for the replies! I do know and trust my hairdresser so that's good and glad others have done it

I do this with my hairdresser to an extent- I may say " a little shorter and choppier" or I'd like to keep some length. She will then suggest a little layering at the back or softening around my face.
I trust her, have been seeing the same sylist for years, she knows what I like, how my hair responds to certain styles and what cut suits my face.
i sometimes say- just do what you think.
I have never been disappointed, but I know she won't give me a green mohican. She knows what I am comfortable with.
I wouldn't say to a new stylist just do as you please- no.

I do this, @MrsMiddleMother . Partly from curiosity at what she'll come up with, partly for fun (we see my hair as a shared experiment) and partly from the security that my horribly thin but very fast growing hair will soon recover from our latest experiment.
'We' went from a, in retrospect, unflattering bob (wrong sort of hair) to currently, a pixie with an undercut. This Wednesday we'll probably ditch the undercut and try a different sort of pixie. I was very nervous about this but she was right, it suits my face.
I think if you trust your hairdresser, you can have a lot of fun together.

I don't think I could bring myself to do this. I'd be too concerned it would be construed as them thinking I wanted a big change.

As others have said it's probably quite a different scenario if you've known your hairdresser for years, they know your hair and have the sense to just do something they can hazard a guestimate you'll be happy with but with a new hairdresser it seems risky.

Depends really doesn't it, if you're an easy going type of person who likes trying new things and isn't at all precious about hair then why not.
