Solovair experiences

Hi!

I am considering buying some winter ankle boots from Solovair and I am wondering about two things. Firstly, how have you experienced the sizing, is it generous or narrow? Secondly, how cushioned are they/how much support do they give? I have a bad knee and I need boots that are not too flat or hard in the sole.

Thanks for any help. I live abroad and will have to pay custom duty, so I want to be as sure as I can before I order!

I'd really like to know as well. I was really disappointed with the last DMs i bought and have heard these are like they were in the good old days.

Watching with interest - I really need a new pair of boots

I have got my eye on a short ankle pair. The most important thing is how supportive they are for me. I have had to give up on other winter boots because they bring back my knee injury.

Anyone?

You would need to check the size of the last for each boot/shoe if you have wide or narrow feet, as they vary. They are much more durable than DM’s and much better quality. I can’t tell the difference in the soles during wearing.

I love mine - have the dealer and the monkey boots. They're very well made, and I find them supportive but they're not shaped for arch support inside or anything. They're basically Dr Martens, but made how they used to be, in the old Northampton factory. I don't find them any more (or less!) comfortable than my dr martens, but the leather is thicker and the sewing and attention to detail is excellent.

My waxy (gaucho leather?) dealer boots have worn in beautifully. They're on their 4th year and still in excellent condition. The sole is actually less worn than my Dr Martens, which have been worn a lot less, so perhaps it is harder wearing?

Sizing is generous, mine are a 6 and I'm a 7 in most other things. That might depend on style though - I think the website is quite detailed.

@JofraArchersFastestBall how does the sizing compare to DMs, is it the same? I'm very tempted by some, but I can be a bit in between sizes. I know my DM size though.

I was wearing Solovair boots today - still breaking them in slowly as I do find them tight on the seam where the tongue is attached. I'd say they are wide as my feet fit in fine, and nice and supportive

How have you found the sizing?

I have half a size up on my normal shoe size, but if I didn't like to wear thick socks with boots I think I could have worn my normal

EraOfTheGrey · 25/09/2022 18:16

I have both the astronaut and the derby and the astronaut are a more narrow fit and I had to go up a size. Due to knee problems I wear orthotics so my experience might not have much useful information. With the Derby boots I find them quite generous so didn't need to go up a size and I found them comfortable straight away with no need to break in.

Sulusu · 25/09/2022 18:20

Solovairs are on the generous side size wise. I have narrow feet and find them a little bigger than my old Dr Martens. I could have gone down a size, but they are fine with thick winter socks.

They are much much better quality than current Dr Martens though. I wouldn't buy DM's now, they are dreadful quality for the high price.

My solovairs have taken a while to be broken in, but are pretty comfy now they are.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 25/09/2022 18:21

My Derby boots are a 6 and the Dr Martens are a 7... I'd say the Solovair are about half a size more generous in this style. On the other hand my monkey boots are also a 6 and are a bit tight....

I have the dealer boots. They're wearing well but I need insoles for support and they're heavy even compared to DMs. They're stiff but never caused blisters. I bought the size based on the size guide and they're ok, but a little on the long side, neither narrow nor wide. I think slightly bigger than the same size men's DMs. DM's have two sets of sizing though, if you're a 7-8 the women's styles are much smaller and narrower than the men's (they try to argue unisex in the shop but obvs it's men's). I'm not sure if Solovair have a switch because I bought black boots a man could wear. They're definitely better quality than DMs and I'd buy another pair.
