How would you wear these t-bar shoes? (With pic)

I’ve had these t-bar shoes from Clark’s for months now and haven’t worn them once.

With trousers: too much sock showing

With skirts: well, I’ll try again today with black opaque tights and a black corduroy shortish skirt, but last time I tried, something wasn’t right. Maybe the twee-ness of the t-bar.

I’m 51, and note that they’re very similar to DSD’s school shoes 🙄

I used to wear this look a lot but now there’s a slight Trunchball/Prison Warder vibe coming through.

I could definitely not carry off the long skirt and ankle socks styling in the image.

I suspect they just aren't for you. I'd wear them with thick tights and a wool type dress but they are definitely a style choice you can either pull off ot not - I love love love t bar shoes, but I look ridiculous in them.

Ratonastick · 24/09/2022 10:59

I have those in black patent. If I am really honest, I don’t know what I was thinking but I do love them. So far the answer has been opaque tights. They go well with short skirts or with a short ish shirt dress from Hobbs. I also have some woolly dresses in the wardrobe for winter which I think they will suit. But anything knee length or lower makes me look like my great aunt, skirt and socks make me look like a primary school child and jeans made me look deranged.

I don’t really think that helps as I have just agreed with your dilemma!

Mabelstearooms · 24/09/2022 10:59

I wouldn't. They're hideous.

Abraxan · 24/09/2022 11:00

I don't have those Ines but so have a 'school shoe' style pair of shoes. I wear them with winter dresses and thick black tights. They are incredibly comfortable!

AlwaysReadyForABlether · 24/09/2022 11:06

I have a very similar black patent pair. I haven’t worn them recently but last summer I wore them with cream wide leg cropped jeans and a cream and black top which I think worked.
I have a pair of black faux leather culottes and, in my head, these shoes will work with them and some very fine knit long black socks. I have all the components but haven’t actually tried it on yet so it might not work in reality!
I can also see them working with thick tights and a knee length skirt - either denim or black cord. I would probably stick to black tights rather than coloured ones.
This style does seem to have become popular again with the “young ones”. My step-daughter has a similar pair for school and I think she’d be horrified to know I had mine first!

LadybirdsAreNeverHappy · 24/09/2022 11:13

I would wear them with dark but not opaque tights, a plain shortish black skirt and a nice colourful chunky jumper and contrasting necklace.
Draw the focus off them but don’t try to disguise them. Make them look like a casual choice and not the point of the outfit.
But it depends a lot on your shape.
Don’t wear them if you don’t feel confident in them.
I like this style and would have gone for it a few years back but unfortunately not now. If you can make it work, do it!!

mnahmnah · 24/09/2022 11:20

I have some similar. Wear them with black tights and midi dresses. Or slightly cropped straight legged tailored trousers and natural pop socks

lovemelongtime · 24/09/2022 11:28

Black tight make them school matron style. You have to vamp them up with bright ankle socks to be remotely cool, but it's a hard look to pull off.

largeprintagathachristie · 24/09/2022 11:30

Thanks for the comments.

Now that tights weather is with us, I’m going to try to see once and for all if the shoes are worth me keeping. I’m sick of them haunting me. £70, I think. 😢

Brogues would have been better as they miss out the tweeness of the T-bar.

When purchasing, I may well have thinking of my indie kid teenage self, where I lived in little 60’s floral dresses from second hand shops and microscopic black skirts, with black tights and clunky shoes and of course looked marvellous.

Give them to your DSD, unless you can pull off super quirky. Forget the £70 and Chalk it up to experience!

TerryOrange · 24/09/2022 14:01

They are for school girls sorry

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 24/09/2022 16:14

No. The t-bar is fine but I don't like the ugly clompy heel and sole.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/09/2022 16:24

Lots of teachers (including me) have shoes like this! They work best with black tights (30/40 d, not the really thick ones) and a mini skirt/shorter dress imo.
