Is anyone in autumn/ winter clothes IF YOU LIVE IN THE NORTH

JuliaDorneys · 24/09/2022 10:12

I'm going north to stay with a friend and am stuck over what to take with me. I know the forecast is for much cooler weather next week.

The question is, will I look silly traveling in winter clothes tomorrow/ ie jumper dress, thick tights and boots, when most people will probably be in shorts and flip flops still.

or are they?

East Yorkshire - not shorts and flip flops but not in tights and jumper dress yet either. Today wearing a light maxi skirt, bare legs under, with a 3/4 sleeved jersey top. Yesterday wore a thin jumper and trousers to work with a linen blazer that I didn’t really need.

Pootles34 · 24/09/2022 10:15

Er no we're not all in flip flops... You might see the odd postie in shorts I suppose. Most women I've noticed are moving into boots and thick tights territory - lots of men in gilets!

Galliano · 24/09/2022 10:15

How North? I wore a summer dress last weekend in Yorkshire and Manchester. I was freezing and noticed others were in transitional wear, not exactly thick wool but definitely long sleeves and layers

PhillyJoe · 24/09/2022 10:16

I would say it’s definitely not cold enough for all that although it is looking cooler next week. I’ve had to take off my coat when waking the kids to school in the mornings this week. You need layers and probably trainers/shoes instead of boots.

TorviShieldMaiden · 24/09/2022 10:17

It’s 18 degrees in my part of Yorkshire today. Definitely not jumper and tights weather!

coffeetofunction · 24/09/2022 10:17

Also east Yorkshire
Yesterday was leggings, top and puffy short jacket. Walked everywhere
Days before using public transport, fluffy jumper, jeans and scarf

RaininginDarling · 24/09/2022 10:24

'North' is doing an awful lot of heavy lifting there. Are you going to be in a city (always a few degrees warmer)? Or going rural? Define: North. Did you say you're visiting someone? Can you ask them? Look at a weather app?

Will you be near the sea? (Generally a few degrees cooler) Or inland? Mountainous (possibly protected micro-climate) or flat (so possibly exposed and windy?)

In NI myself. Just sat outside in the sun in my jammies. It's chilly at night (5 degrees last night) but pleasant and warm in the sun. Definitely not sandals weather but too warm for anything but a light coat in the day. Tomorrow could be completely different.

This time of year, I'd take layers. Enjoy.

JuliaDorneys · 24/09/2022 10:25

North as in Newcastle (and yes, I know the young girls wear next to nothing all year round when out on the toon!)

But 'normal' people!?

Long sleeved t- shirt, dungarees and denim jacket for me in the nw.

JuliaDorneys · 24/09/2022 10:28

So I was thinking of travelling in a lightish maxi skirt, T shirt, cardi and a coat (if necessary.)

I wondered if everyone else would be in thicker clothes and I'd look rather silly.

I wore socks for the first time in months this week, but not in tights or jumpers yet. There is an option between flip flops and arctic gear you know.

OxanaVorontsova · 24/09/2022 10:32

There’s only a couple of degrees difference in temperature, I was in London last week and my ‘northern’ outfit was fine

Nothingbuttheglory · 24/09/2022 10:35

In Newcastle - today I am wearing

Linen joggers
Short sleeve t shirt
Shacket (when outdoors)
Trainers

Next week I might wear a jumper, especially if spending much time outdoors.

MichaelAndEagle · 24/09/2022 10:35

I'm in Newcastle, in jeans, t shirt, cashmere type jumper. Socks and boots.
Would wear light coat and possibly light scarf.
Not yet thick tights and winter coat for me.
Light maxi skirt might be a bit chilly.

MichaelAndEagle · 24/09/2022 10:36

Ooh hello @Nothingbuttheglory !

Nothingbuttheglory · 24/09/2022 10:36

It’s been warm in my part of Cumbria/ Yorkshire for the past few days. I never wear sandals or flip flops but I’ve not had a hoodie on for four days straight! Tomorrow looks good too. Bring trainers and layers.

babysharksb1tch · 24/09/2022 10:39

Geordie here 🙌🏻

I'd be wearing jeans, boots, long top and cardi going out and about. Probably no coat. Definitely not summer wear.

Unless on the Big Market, then I'd be wearing nowt. Just kidding, I have two kids so never leave the house.

Reallyreallyborednow · 24/09/2022 10:43

do people really give a shit? Can’t say I’ve ever looked at anyone and thought ooh they’re dressed very unseasonably!

this is the North. Expect everything from Wellies to clubbers in bikini tops.

it’s not “big coat” weather yet.

as long as you are comfortable and warm/cool enough, why does it matter about what others think? I’d rather be the right temperature. I don’t have seasonal clothes anyway, i find layers cover every eventuality.

NewWateringCan · 24/09/2022 10:47

I'm in Yorkshire, wearing dresses with tights, and jeans and jumpers! and a jacket/coat. I do run cold though.

TorviShieldMaiden · 24/09/2022 10:50

I agree. Wear whatever you like, what keeps you at a comfortable temperature. It doesn’t even cross my mind to consider whether other people are dressed according to what I think the temperature is. Who cares what other people think (I didn’t anyone actually thinks much about other people’s clothes)

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 24/09/2022 10:57

North west. I have been out this AM running errands on foot in ankle grazer trousers and sweater - no jacket. Kids have gone to their Saturday (indoor) activities in t shirts and hoodies. I've seen people in t shirts and in light jackets but no Big Coats yet.

Enjoy Newcastle - such a fab city.

EllaPaella · 24/09/2022 11:02

I'm in the North East. Early mornings have been pretty chilly so I've left the house for work at 7am in jumper, jeans and a coat then left work at 5 to find it's warm and sunny outside 😎
I haven't gone full winter mode yet. Trainers rather than boots and a light jacket rather than my full puffa coat.

EllaPaella · 24/09/2022 11:04

I am near Newcastle, it's quite mild during the day. What you plan to wear sounds fine although it has been raining a lot!
