New York in Winter - Coat

I am going early next year, late January.

I need a new coat/jacket. What I am not sure about is getting a big warm coat which might get in the way or be too hot when I go inside or a shorter bum covering jacket.

Then I wonder if I should go for something like a waxed jacket with enough space underneath for base layer, t shirt, jumper and then may be a body warmer on particularly cold days.

I am trying to look stylish as most photos will be outside. I fear looking like Mr Blobby in a puffer coat. I don’t want to look like someone has just walked out of their local Mountain Warehouse either.

have you been in Winter? Any tips?

Oh wear a long puffa coat, it is bloody freezing in January. I wore a hip length puffa coat with gloves hat and scarf and was too cold in trousers but it was manageable in jeans. If I was going again I would wear a long coat, with boots, and hat gloves scarf.

Most New Yorkers will be in coats that are mid thigh length or longer. I saw ankle length puffa coats for the first time (they weren't fashionable back then). Lots of long wool coats, especially among the posher types and even a few real furs. Oh and some all in one padded overalls that looked super cosy!

It is much colder than over here!

Thank you for your advice. I will be in the Northern part of the country. I’m guessing a good coat and a sturdy pair of boots. I’ve never taken a holiday in the cold….what possessed me?! I’d better see the northern lights to cross off from the bucket list! Thank you, once more x

Have a wonderful time!! Take lots of layers for outside (everywhere is lovely and warm inside) and some slippers for inside. The people are lovely (my ex is from the North of Norway so I've been brainwashed over the years), you'll love it.

It will be freezing. I would go full length puffa. Not only does it get very cold, the skyscrapers create a lot of shade and wind.

How lovely you all are. I appreciate the tips, thank you.

Knee length down filled coat. North Face type. Bonus points for black.

Stout footwear with a low heel.

A skiing gaiter instead of a scarf.

Knit beanie or hat with bobble.

Warm gloves.

One BIG coat plus some proper boots with some insulation. I have some Sorel booties I like a lot, they have a great non slip sole and are thick but they look like regular stylish booties.

the problem with lots of layers and thermals under your clothes is you are forever dealing with this huge pile of stuff plus you’ll get really hot inside if you’re wearing thermals. And will look hopelessly unstylish. a waxed jacket would be a joke. No amount of sweaters would keep you warm.

Went to uni in Boston, my first year it was -40 in January. NYC tends to be a little warmer, but would still expect it to be well below zero the whole time and WINDY.

Thanks everyone. Going shopping in a couple of weeks once more stock is in the shops. I've seen a superdry longer coat online. Will try that and keep in mind everyone's comments on here which have been very helpful.

Got thermals
Got boots x 2
Got thermal socks
Got hats
Got scarfs
Need coat and good gloves.
