Anyone with thick dark hair had a Hollywoood wax?

Gone to order a regular basic wax and this has come up on offer as part of a two treatment deal. My hair is so thick I can't shave my bikini area as the regrowth is quick and unbearably itchy. Is it going to be that x10 if I have it all waxed off??

Consider laser. It's life changing.

AnotherCountryMummy · 19/09/2022 18:24

No OP, regular waxing will eventually make the hair grow back thinner as it damages the follicle over time. Plus you aren't cutting the hair at a blunt angle so it won't grow back sharp and spikey like with shaving.

Silverpossum · 19/09/2022 20:21

Thanks both. I should really consider laser as I hate waxing!

Can I give a vote for laser as well! I have very thick dark hair and keeping it under control has been such a dominant theme of my life since I was about 12. I'm now 43 and in the past couple of years have had laser on my legs, underarms, bikini and lip/chin and it's properly changed my life and hugely improved my self esteem. Almost makes me a bit emotional, my only regret is not doing it sooner.

Yes 🤐
Hurt for the 30 minutes it took but was fine afterwards. Its bearable if you are desperate for a hairless area but ... I am not. Crosses legs.
I found when the lady applied thinner smaller sections of wax its was more.manageable.
Its jus when she covered a large swathe with wax ... and it kept getting stuck that I panicked and got very nervous! Survived to tell the tale too. Gulp.

I've done home DIY sugaring but never waxing so I can't compare the two. I have the same hair type. It worked and wasn't particularly painful, like ripping off a plaster. Lasted longer than hair removal cream.

skippy67 · 22/09/2022 01:32

Those who've had laser, are there different types? Do you have to book a course if treatments? I'd like to get some appointments for dd as a gift, but don't know the first thing about it.

Kam610 · 22/09/2022 01:53

I have, the worst bit I found was the bit above my public bone. The rest of it was fine. Don't go to someone who uses the warm wax and strips though, make sure they use hot wax without the strips. It doesn't hurt nearly as bad.

BritInAus · 22/09/2022 01:56

I wouldn't waste time or money on waxing when you could get laser. It works well for dark hair and pale skin. 7 sessions in and i'm hair free in all the areas I had lasered a year later. Only wish I'd done it sooner. The laser places near me constantly have special offers. their half price offers aren't much more than waxing.

Inca22 · 23/09/2022 22:38

Can you get a Hollywood with laser and does it hurt?

DublinDoris2000 · 23/09/2022 23:08

Laser all the way. You don't feel nothing but its way less painful than waxing. I used to get terrible rashes and spots with waxing too, which you don't laser

I waxed for years and alas saw no reduction in thickness or speed of hair growth. A few sessions with a Lumea was life changing.

Silverpossum · 24/09/2022 06:37

Thanks all. I've decided to go for laser!

Laser from me too! Just had a top up session 11 years after having it all off, there were 3 rogue hairs after all that time.

Autumn2022 · 24/09/2022 06:48

It hurts less and less each time. If I were you I would start outwards and work in as it will be really painful if you just go for it after shaving.

Highlighta · 24/09/2022 06:52

When you say lasering, is this the same as the IPL? I'm a redhead, and so IPL isn't an option for me. I am assuming lasering will be the same?

Ironmanrocks · 24/09/2022 06:53

I bought a lumea too. So convenient....just need to keep topping it up but my legs barely have hair now. I can also do whenever I want. It's great. X

PumpkinDart · 25/09/2022 07:57

I've got thick, dark, coarse hair. Had my first Hollywood about 6 weeks ago, sparse hair regrowth at the moment it's definitely not thicker at the moment anyway.

hedgehogscrossing · 25/09/2022 08:07

I bought a Kenzzi at home Ilp device and am doing my own bikini area, it is amazing and so convenient to be able do in the evenings when im watching netflix etc. I am pale with medium brown hair.

AnastasiaBeaverhousen · 25/09/2022 08:12

I have ridiculously thick course head hair. It can take 3+ hours to dry naturally. I started having Brazilian waxes last summer and progressed to Hollywood. Regrowth has slowed down, I go every 6 weeks and get fewer ingrowers now.

I’m interested to know this too.

'Proper' lasers are more powerful than IPL, and different models with different wavelengths might be able to help different hair colours. But the ideal is fair skin, dark hair, so results on red hair will be down to luck somewhat. I had fairly fine light leg hair which responded better than expected (I changed clinics halfway through treatment and the second one said they wouldn't have recommended I have the treatment at all) but it's definitely not cleared 100%, maybe 85?

Might be worth seeing someone for a consultation, but if your hair really is pale, then no laser probably not a good option
