Ds plays rugby, I love to watch but even yesterday it was cold. They play in all weathers.
I need a coat that's really warm, preferably waterproof with a good & I'd like it to look ok, preferably no too bulky
I do t mind spending a bit (£200-£300), what brands to look at please?

North Face. I bought one last winter and love it.

Go fora dryrobe!

Matchstickcathedral · 19/09/2022 09:54

RAB deep cover parka. The warmest coat I’ve ever had, with a proper hood that actually stays up and protects you from the wind and rain.

Pea79 · 19/09/2022 09:56

DryRobe, every day of the week. They're snuggly AND waterproof!

Gozleme · 19/09/2022 10:01

Please don’t wear a dry robe 🙈 They are so ubiquitous and it makes me cringe to see people wearing them, unless they have actually been in cold water and need to get changed.

We live by the sea and tourists flock around in them for no apparent reason. There are often whole “dry robe” families. It’s become a bit of a joke and they are up there with superdry coats now in terms of ‘fashion’. There are so many decent coats out there, so just why?!

I've got a bench coat, they sell them in the clubhouse 50 quid. Warm and supporting the club to boot!

I'm a football mum. Dryrobe and Muckboots is the way to go to be warm and dry, albeit nit stylish.

Too bulky for you? I love the hand bits on it.

Photosymphysis · 19/09/2022 10:14

Dryrobes might have a reputation but they are very good. I've got an equestrian version (which has actually been near a horse) and I'm looking forward to surviving a winter of hockey matches in it (plus the smell will keep the riff raff at arms length!)

Bonus of these oversized coats is that you can fit another layer underneath

I'd never heard of them. Just took a look and yep - not for me. Practical yes, stylish no.

I have a Didrikson parka. Fully waterproof and very cosy.

cherrypiepie · 19/09/2022 19:22

Also came onto say rab deep cover Parka!

CMOTDibbler · 19/09/2022 20:56

Lands End Expedition maxi down coat. Happy warmth from top to bottom. I also have a Regatta heated coat which is amazing when you are just standing or sitting around as it makes you actively warm.

declutteringmymind · 19/09/2022 21:01

I have a north face parka. It's not fashionable but an absolute godsend.

MagpiePi · 19/09/2022 21:08

After many, many years of standing on the sidelines of rugby pitches, I can recommend wearng ski trousers. Or at least one pair of thermal leggings and waterproof/windproof over trousers.

For a coat, I used to wear mid-thigh length Rab plus a full length outback coat.

I often wondered if rugby clubs have some special direct wind link to the Siberian steppes.

StridTheKiller · 19/09/2022 21:08

Why is it any of your business who wears what? Is it envy, as they are £160+ quid? How sad.
I find that outdoorsy people wsar these robes because they are truly snug and waterproof. Gorilla Robes are a good but cheaper alternative, though i shall smile everytime i wear my Dry Robe knowing some envious and judgemental little twerp is getting their knickers knotted over it.

I’ve never heard of them, I’m about to look them up but here is north face Canada goose or moose knuckle

Are they actual coats or things you wear over your swimming costume to get changed? Or do you wear them for both?

balzamico · 20/09/2022 14:51

Thanks all, I've ordered the Rab parka - I wouldn't wear a dry robe - I would never wild swim and don't wish to be mistaken for someone who does! (A lot of wild swimming in reservoirs near here which seems bonkers/ dangerous but moreover Im utterly crap at cold water!)
Thanks for the suggestions, hoping I'll be cosy in future!
