Being matchy-matchy

learieonthewildmoor · 19/09/2022 06:34

I am terrible for needing to be matching in the colours I wear. I will match my eyeshadow and lipstick to a colour I’m wearing.
My friend’s daughter was 12 when she said “My teacher is like learie, her tops and shoes are always the same colour”.
I actually feel uncomfortable and not right if I’m not matching. I can never wear two patterned items.
In an effort to be less rigid, I can now wear a neutral eyeshadow and lipstick that is a third colour, and I have a yellow handbag that is the only yellow thing in my wardrobe. Pushing the boundaries.
I watched a Trinny London video where the woman bought an orange jumpsuit and a red coat/cape and I loved it on her, but could never ever do it.

Are you matchy, or do you range the colour and pattern spectrum?

Oh OP you need to push your boundaries .. only the Queen can do matchy matchy🤨
Break the rules! Wear that pink and red!

hugoagogo · 19/09/2022 07:29

You seem to regard it as a failing, I'm not sure why?
Everyone makes choices about what they wear based on their personal taste and comfort. I really wouldnt worry about it, so you like things to match? Where's the harm?

Ilikecheeseontoast · 19/09/2022 07:38

I like to match colours in clothes, shoes and bags but don’t bother with make up. I don’t see anything wrong with it!

30hourschildcare · 19/09/2022 07:45

I don't think there is anything wrong with it unless it's obsessional.

I like to match, but it wouldn't bother me if I didn't. And day to day, school runs etc, all that matters is I'm clean and tidy looking.

glowingghost · 19/09/2022 07:50

I know it’s considered passé but I am a matchy matchy person too OP! Just doesn’t feel right to me to have e.g. navy bag and black shoes. I don’t tend to match make up though as I hardly wear any.

purpledagger · 19/09/2022 08:50

What I find that works for me, is dressing for my season. I haven't had my colours done, but I self diagnosed so I broadly (but not always) stick to clothes in this colour palette.

The colours in your season should compliment each other, so you can wear them together without looking matchy matchy.

DillDanding · 19/09/2022 08:55

Matching your bag to your shoes is a fashion faux-pas and it’s quite a frumpy look.

I don’t think I’ve ever attempted to match my makeup to my clothes.

TwoBlondes · 19/09/2022 09:04

I'm the same and frequently get asked how I'm so elegant 😳🤭 I just look and feel more pulled together if I limit how many colours I'm wearing.

You're allowed to have your own style.

TroysMammy · 19/09/2022 09:10

I wouldn't wear pink lipstick with a red top and vice versa.

thebabessavedme · 19/09/2022 09:10

It's your style, you like it, wear it and enjoy it.

It's not "frumpy" it's a personal choice. It can look a lot more chic than a hodge podge of colours and styles.

thebabessavedme · 19/09/2022 09:10

It's your style, you like it, wear it and enjoy it.

Exactly this.
Find your style and confidence. If you feel better when things match, that works for you.

We had a teacher at school who had a trademark look of matching her jumper and socks.

Always with black trousers, what would now be known as ankle grazers. Black shoes or trainers in good weather DMs in winter.

A brightly coloured slightly over sized cotton knitted jumper, different each day, fire engine red, bright purple, emerald green, turquoise and the matching socks showing.

She looked great, distinctive and clearly happy with her clothes.

Matching isn't particularly fashionable but you don't have to slavishly follow fashion. Wear what you enjoy and thinks looks good.

JudgeRindersMinder · 19/09/2022 09:34

I’m definitely more matchy matchy than I’m not. I don’t match my makeup to my clothes other than lipstick, as others have said I won’t do red lipstick with a pink outfit.
Im rediscovering an interest in clothes/fashion after many years so am probably playing it a bit safe. I wear dresses rather than skirts/tops which makes it easier.
I think a lot of it with colours is an age thing, rules are different now than when I was growing up, which isn’t a bad thing, but I’ll never do black and navy together!

BoxOfCats · 19/09/2022 09:42

I love matching!
Nowadays I just own it. My work colleagues all know it's my thing and comment in it in an amused sort of way. And yes I definitely colour coordinate makeup too (not necessarily to "match" but at least to coordinate).

TheOGCCL · 19/09/2022 10:33

Matching isn't modern, you see it in interior design too. In the old days you'd have it all neatly matching, that looks outmoded now. One feature wall isn't enough, you are supposed to clash prints and colours. You do really need to know what you're doing or you (or your house) end up looking a mess.

Style and fashion pushes on step by step, often dragging most people along eventually, so you may find you get more confident, eg the yellow bag, as your eye adjusts. No need to force anything. I don't like matchy matchy particularly in formal wear, eg picking out a colour from a dress and having shoes and handbag in same colour. I think it's fresher to have something more unexpected. But I'm from Trinny's school and I also think it can be possible to go too far and look wacky.

learieonthewildmoor · 19/09/2022 15:15

Black and navy - never. I can’t wear brown shoes with black clothes, either.
Being matchy didn’t particularly bother me until I started reading S&B regularly 😄

I love matchy matchy. I blame it on being an 80's teenager.

TwoBlondes · 19/09/2022 21:15

I can do black and navy but I very much subscribe to no brown in town, although I absolutely love brown, so much more flattering than black

Notarealmum · 21/09/2022 12:52

I’m the same. Shoes and bags too. I wouldn’t describe myself as a particularly ‘safe’ dresser in general but I do like to coordinate and always will, whatever fashion might tell me to the contrary. Do your own thing, OP, I’ll bet you look great!

Mumsnut · 21/09/2022 12:58

If my bag doesn't match my shoes, it matches something else I'm wearing ...

LunaTheCat · 19/09/2022 07:21

Break the rules! Wear that pink and red!

I've got a jumper on that is half pink half orange.

JOFFCV · 21/09/2022 13:01

I try and unmatch my bag & shoes.

PillowKase · 21/09/2022 13:28

I try not to match my bag and shoes as I feel that is a bit like my Nan, but I am quite ‘matchy’ otherwise. I tend to go for different shades of the same colour. So today I have brown shoes, camel cardi, tan belt, rust coloured bag.

Im not saying I’m any sort of style icon, mind you 😉

YumYummy · 21/09/2022 14:50

I like matching and mixing it up. I often wear silver and gold jewellery together. In the autumn I have lots of autumn coloured clothes and wear any combo of them together. Today I went out in head to toe khaki, I didn’t really plan it, I had a khaki patterned dress and bag and grabbed a jacket hat also happened to be green.
