Do Dr Martens loosen off, esp at the top of your foot?

I'm wearing a pair of DMs round the house trying to decide whether to keep them or not...I'd say they are the right size, my toes are no where near the end of them and they don't feel tight width wise. But they feel tight over the top of my foot...Will the leather give in that area? I know DMs can be notoriously hard to break in. They are the Chelsea boot style

It all depends on the leather, the closer to the patent end of the spectrum the harder they are to break in. Although they do a softening product but I don’t know how good it is.

Mine didn’t sorry and I’ve worn them loads, never been able to for a longish walk though

ToooOldForThis · 17/09/2022 21:00

Thank you! I think they might have to go back, booo

Just received a pair of flatform chelsea and they're going straight back

Ouch

Totally depends on the 'leather' really patent has pretty much no give, but the other leathers may stretch. I have managed to stretch some that were too tight on the top of my feet through a combination of shoe stretching spray, shoe stretchers and then finishing off the job with stretching spray and wearing them with thick socks for longer and longer periods of time.. Took about 2 weeks effort and then suddenly they were super comfy.

I have the soft leather ones that were tight where the tongue is attached at first but have loosened off.

Ohhh was it across the top of your foot? The bridge?
My feet went numb and I gave up in the end! Have ordered a size up, hoping they're not too big now!

I had the same problem, the top of my foot just above my toes was agony! Went for a size up and the boots were too big but still dug in

Now I exclusively wear Rieker combat boots

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 24/09/2022 01:11

Mine never did. They were the supposedly soft leather. They were unwearable.

deedledeedledum · 24/09/2022 03:14

Why do they make them so tight across the top of the foot?

Monty27 · 24/09/2022 03:27

You have to be a complete follower of DMs to suffer it. Eventually they do after many blisters.

I got mine to stretch but I'm not convinced it was worth it to be honest. I know it's a cliché but they don't make um like they used to. The bits that stiffen them at the back were only cardboard and wore through very quickly, making them lumpy and unwearable.

This is how I did it though.

They were so tight over my toes where the tongue was stitched that my toes would go numb after a few minutes. I searched the Internet and tried everything.

I read that the best option was to wear 2 thick pairs of socks and stand in warm water. I put 2 pairs of hiking socks on and stood in the bath, walking and moving my feet. I went to sit down on the end of the bath but the bottom of the bath was curved and I slipped over. Ended up sitting down in tge bath.

The water soaked into the socks which made them swell up, I couldn't get the boots off. It was 11pm, I was alone in the house in soaking wet PJs and DM boots. It took me ages to prise them off and I was in a bit of a panic by the end.

The boots were wet so I stuffed them with tea towels and left them to dry for a few days.

After that they were more comfortable, but as I said they didn't last.

Oh poor you. I've just bought these

They were a wee bit stiff to begin with but took just a few days to soften up and are really comfortable.
