Help me with my hairy face!

I have always had very fine peach fuzz on my face which has never bothered me as it is very pale, short and fine so not that noticeable. However since I have turned 40 (currently 42), I have started to get the dreaded whiskers on my chin. My peach fuzz also seems to have started growing, so although it is still very light and fine there seems to be a lot more of it, and it is getting longer and much more noticeable. What do I do? I don't think I can use a Philips Lumea as it is very blonde hair (and the thick ones are dark red I think), and am nervous of shaving in case it grows back thicker and I constantly have a stubbly face and spots from ingrown hairs. Any magic solutions or is this just one of the many indignities I just have to bear as menopause inches closer?

I shave every day. I'd grow an impressive goatee if I didn't.

jc57 · 16/09/2022 14:55

@Allmarbleslost Really?! Oh god, so I just need to embrace the full shave then? Any tips?

Dermaplaning/home equivalents. I use a Veet detmaplaner for my peach fuzz, now discontinued but you can probably find them on Ebay.

I use the little razors - like the ones you’ve linked to but wilkinsons sword, about £3 on Amazon. It’s not as scary as you might imagine coz the fuzz comes off v easily with a v light touch on a dry face. No issues with making the hairs thicker. I only do it about once a month and they just gradually grow back. It’s massively satisfying to do!

BangingOn · 16/09/2022 15:53

I really like the Tweezerman metal dermaplaning razor that comes with additional blades. I get the occasional horrid thick hair that has to be tweezed, but the razor does the job for most of them.

jc57 · 16/09/2022 15:59

@Gridhopper £3! I do like a bargain! Do you need to use them with oil/shaving cream?

@jc57 no lotions, just a clean, dry face. Some helpful tutorials on YouTube as to angles, etc. My advice is don’t think you need to press on, you’re just kind of stroking the blade across your skin almost!

Mollymoofer · 16/09/2022 16:50

I’m same as you, OP. More pronounced peach fuzz and the odd black wiry hair - horrid! 😖 I’m nervous of the shave but I’ve used a facial hair removal creme that sainsburys sells and will stick with it. Hair doesn’t seem to come back as vigorously though it does feel a bit strange being completely hairless for the first day or two.

DoAllMyOwnStunts · 16/09/2022 18:11

Threading every 3-4 weeks.
Hurts like fuck the first time.
The smoothness is unrivalled and no stubble or 5 oclock shadow.

woodhill · 16/09/2022 18:13

I some use wax strips or one of those springy epilators

Wouldn't want to shave

Whatsthepointofmosquitos · 16/09/2022 18:18

DON’T PLUCK! It increases blood flow to the root of the plucked hair, which stimulates other hair follicles nearby to grow the thick black hair. 🤦‍♀️

DON’T LASER! It can do the same thing, if the reason for the hair growth is hormonal, which at your age and on your chin it will be.

Either shave off the hair every morning and night (me) or pay lots for electrolysis (also me).

Sucks.

If you’re overweight, the fat will store hormones which makes the problem worse, so if you happen to be overweight you might wanna diet (also me 😬)

Good luck, and remember, no matter how much hair grows on your chin… I probably have more 😐

woodhill · 16/09/2022 18:24

I wish I'd known about plucking

OOH sometimes it's the only way to get the hair out especially chin hairs

Is electrolysis any good

Athyrium · 16/09/2022 18:29

Epilator works for me. Just run it quickly over my face every couple of weeks. Tho I do pluck the biggies!

MushMonster · 16/09/2022 18:36

Dermaplanning, it is just a tiny razor to remove the fuzz and it clears your sk8n too.
Hair does not grow out any thicker.
For actual chin hairs I think you can use the laser indeed. You can shave it and reduce the appearance of the hair with the laser, as the laser actually targets the hair under the skin.
If they are so light that they cannot be seen or reduced with the laser, shaving with the little razor does the trick.
Do not be scared of razors! I do mot know who the hell spread that around but it has been troubling women forever!
You will never get stubble.
You may get ingrown hairs if you tweeze or wax them. I would not recommend that, bit it does work for some people!

Midsizegal29 · 16/09/2022 18:36

Look for an electrolysis practitioner near you. It works on light hair where IPL doesn’t!

newtb · 16/09/2022 18:56

According to French items I get sentw you can use a bicarb paste to remove facial hair. I find tweezerman 15x mirror and angled tweezers help.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 16/09/2022 18:59

Phillips Lumea all the way.

Moneypanicker · 16/09/2022 19:01

I was always so self-conscious about why whiskers. I bit the bullet and had electrolysis. I found it painful but it does work. So glad I did it, no problems at all now. I decided against laser as in some people it makes the hair growth worse and knowing my luck it would do that to me.

Caroffee · 16/09/2022 20:26

Yes, use blades designed for your face rather than your legs.

Caroffee · 16/09/2022 20:29

jc57 · 16/09/2022 15:59

@Gridhopper £3! I do like a bargain! Do you need to use them with oil/shaving cream?

I find them okay to use on dry skin but oil prevents any redness. Veet sell a facial oil specifically for use with dermaplaning tools.

AdamantEve · 16/09/2022 20:48

I dry shave the peach fuzz whenever I realise it’s grown too long again - have been doing this years and it hasn’t made it grow back any thicker/darker/all the things I worried about.

The wiry black hairs that have recently kept popping up, I just pluck out. Going to get a magnifying mirror soon and I’m sure I’ll be horrified at all the hairs I’ve missed 😂

Tatapie · 16/09/2022 22:09

Facial veet hair removal cream, every couple of weeks , easy to do!

jc57 · 16/09/2022 22:24

Thanks everyone, I’ve ordered one of the little razor things and going to give that a try first. Although I’m sorry that you are all hairy too, I’m glad I’m not alone. I’ve had many conversations with friends and relatives about getting older and not one has mentioned facial hair. I was starting to think I belonged in the circus but it is reassuring to know it is normal!

Dermaplaning with a 'Stacked' blade. Pricey but worth it. See YouTube videos.
Really good for blond fluff. No stubble. Been using the device for 3yrs.
Lumea is fantastic for dark hair. Only need to use that a couple of times a year, if that, to zap persistent ones.
