Wearing a tartan dress to a Scottish wedding?

WellWaitForItToPass · 14/09/2022 21:02

I’m going to a winter wedding in Scotland and I’ve seen a beautiful black watch tartan dress. But is it a massive faux pas to wear tartan to a Scottish wedding? Will I look silly when I’m not Scottish? Or am I overthinking this!?

Thank you!

Thats the dress - but I’d shorten it to knee length.

Sounds lovely, do you have a link?
I'm not sure really can't decide if it might look odd if the men are wearing kilts or if it might be quite nice. I think it might depend on the colours

FizzyFucker · 14/09/2022 21:04

Scottish person, in Scotland here - its gorgeous and you'd look fab, no one would think it weird.

sheepandcaravan · 14/09/2022 21:05

Lovely. Absolutely fine. I got married 18 December and am Scottish

Wafflefudge · 14/09/2022 21:05

It's lovely

excelledyourself · 14/09/2022 21:07

No, not weird.

But I also wouldn't shorten it. I think it's a nice length as it is, for a full skirt.

Headisrecked · 14/09/2022 21:09

No problem at all at a Scottish wedding

MushMonster · 14/09/2022 21:10

I love it!
I used to wear all sort of tartan skirts when I was a child. Cream and blue, dark colours with blue and green, dark browns and red. With pleats all around, with wrap around and flat on the front, with leather straps to fasten them...
Name it, I have worn it. It was much in fashion at the time. And I loved them so much. So soft and warm, with warm wooly tights.
I am from Spain lol
I wish I still had some of them for my daughter!

Thank you. I’m only 5’ so mid length really doesn’t suit me sadly!

Is it a kilted wedding?

TizerorFizz · 14/09/2022 21:18

Short waisted dress doesn’t suit anyone much. I think midi is more stylish. Can you manage heels? It’s out of proportion if it’s shortened. I’d probably choose a plain colour.

I think a non-scottish person at a scottish wedding wearing a tartan dress would look a bit silly....

My viewpoint is as a scottish person who has been to a lot of scottish weddings.

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 14/09/2022 21:21

Love the first one.
You'll look braw, hen 😆

WellWaitForItToPass · 14/09/2022 21:23

Yes kilted.

I’m so glad I asked now!

I’d just double check the bridesmaids weren’t wearing tartan or the groom wearing that particular one!

Heatherbell1978 · 14/09/2022 21:25

It's a lovely dress but not sure if it's strange for a non-Scot to wear it. I'm Scottish and DH is English and he won't wear a kilt as he doesn't think he 'should'. It feels like quite an American thing to do (are you American?)

SirChenjins · 14/09/2022 21:26

First one is lovely 😊 It’s not too tartan and shortbread, so it won’t look out of place.

Hugasauras · 14/09/2022 21:26

My English husband has worn a kilt to weddings here on several occasions and has not been the only one to do so! I think it looks a bit odder not to when the vast majority of the male guests are wearing one anyway.

OMG can you imagine!? That hadn’t even crossed my mind 😱

I am not an American, no!

Out of interest Why?
is a lovely dress with a nod to the host country. It’s obviously not military black watch dress.
hsrris tweed and other tartans are commonly used in a range of apparel. Why would this specifically be odd? And would it only after you’d interrogated the English heritage that you’d think so?

I day this as an English person with a close family member (also English) who wore a ‘help for heroes’ kilt to his highland wedding to an English bride in a small Scottish community (to which they had close ties) and no one batted an eyelid (and yes there were plenty of local scots there!)

So you’re saying don’t team it with this hat? 🧐

Obviously not really but this is the vibe I’m concerned about giving!

Yes it's definitely not unusual at any wedding I've been to. No one would bat an eyelid at an English or otherwise person wearing a kilt along with everyone else! It's positively encouraged IME!

AdoraBell · 14/09/2022 21:30

I think the first link is better, and as pp said check if the bridesmaids are wearing tartan dresses.

Doidontimmm · 14/09/2022 21:36

My friends bridesmaids wore a very similar dress hence my comment! Also you don’t want to match the groom haha!
