Multiple ear piercings - in, out or in between?

OhJoyOhJoy · 14/09/2022 17:58

Just asking out of curiosity really - I love the look of multiple delicate earrings and spend far too much time online looking at pictures of other people's ears. On the internet it seems that either this look is mega on-trend, or it's so popular it might no longer even be that trendy. But in real life, literally nobody I know has it and even my two tiny cartilage piercings make me feel a bit out there at work. A couple of arty friends have more alternative looking piercings that have been there for decades and that's it. So what's the reality in your circles?

I have 2 lobe in each ear, and then in one ear 2 helix, tragus, conch and rook, I have the same earrings in each piercing, however often change the first lobe to match an outfit.

If you fancy a new piercing, go for it, I wouldn't worry was is 'in' or not.

I’m definitely out there in my very sensible work world with mine, but I bumped a school mum friend recently who had new piercings from the same piercers as me and we agreed that we were approaching our mid-life crisis in the same way. I think it’s similar to wearing my airforce ones, I think I’m being current but every time someone below 30-ish sees me in mine I can see that a little bit of their soul dies. Im not sure how old you are but I know deep down that by buying into the trend I’m simultaneously ruining it.

Pourmeanotherwine · 14/09/2022 18:12

Definitely in with my daughters and their friends, but might be a Bristol thing.

MarigoldMoonStone · 14/09/2022 18:41

I have 4 lobe, a tragus and a conch piercing. Going to get another soon. If you like it, get it…ear piercings really aren’t that out there!

Coniferhedge · 14/09/2022 19:03

I’ve only got one lobe piercing in each ear but I’d love more. I saw this the other day and I think it looks lovely. There’s only two things stopping me. That I’m 50 years old and I’m worried it might look a bit tragic in a mid life crisis sort of way and that I’m a big wuss when it comes to pain.

Not in my circle, but I definitely see people with those piercings on the tube etc. so they are out there.

I wouldn't worry about whether it's 'in' or not, just whether you like it.

Rockbird · 14/09/2022 19:20

6 lobes, two helix, one flat, one forward helix and a tragus. I don't change most of them but I love them. I'm too fat to wear the clothes I want so I pierced my ears instead!

Haha, this is exactly how I feel! I love mine, and on-trend or not, I'm definitely getting another one soon, but I'd love to know if that makes me ahead of the curve or a trend murderer !

2 lobes in each ear. Left ear also has a flat piercing, a forward helix, and a conch. Right ear also has a rook. I do want more

sponsabillaries · 14/09/2022 19:37

Very much the norm to have at least a couple of lobe piercings and the odd cartilage in my 30-something circle. I have three in each lobe and two in my left helix, all from when I was about 17 and empty for years before Maria Tash started the trend. I think they look lovely.

Flumpymc · 14/09/2022 19:38

I've got lots. There's three of us out of the five women in my team with lots. Financial services so not an especially out there or creative office 😆

Same - I have three in each lobe and my tragus, and until the likes of Maria Tash et al bringing in the idea of a 'curated ear' I'd sort of left them alone/just worn a pair of studs in my main lobe ones, but now I'm actually thinking about combinations of studs and small hoops for them and wearing something in all of them.

I suspect there are a number of women in their late 30s to mid-40s who have a similar sort of set and it really plays into that. Or those who didn't get them done when they were 16, and regretted it so are going back and getting it done now that their parents can't tell them off!

MaryJoLisa · 14/09/2022 19:52

If you want piercings, absolutely get them. However, piercings became increasingly mainstream over the last few years, and I would gently suggest that when 40 something women who have never had many before start getting lots, they are likely to be at the tail end of the trend rather than leading it. That is not to say you shouldn't, but it's most definitely not a new thing.

I got my daith done last year at 55yo so age is not a barrier.
Pain wise I didn't feel any , I thought they were still marking the point of needle entry, it felt more like a cocktail stick pressing ( they do tell you to take a breath in-out-in then do it)

Mine has healed pretty well , I'm ten months in. Only annoys m if I sleep on that side with my ear folded .

On that photo , you could choose what you like the look of an go for one or two ( I think they'll do a max of 3 at a time)
I don't think I've got enough tragus to pierce but the snug (middle of the outer ear rim bit ) is pretty

Whycanineverever · 14/09/2022 21:13

Not my ear but I'm nearly 50 and just had my eyebrow pierced. I always wanted it done but the world of work was not as accepting 30 years ago.

alwaystrainers · 14/09/2022 21:15

I've just got an interview and husband told I should take my tiny nose stud out but I'm not going to. It's not a super formal role and loads have it done in my circle of 40 somethings

I hadn't thought of this - that our age group mostly don't have to get all the piercings from scratch 😀

I also read somewhere that the Maria Tash look is more popular with slightly older women because you need a certain amount of disposable income to afford all the pretty sparkly jewellery.

To be honest, find the idea of a style that belongs to us middle-aged types just because we love it quite uplifting.

My wife has 9 piercings in her left lobe all the way up from the lobe to the top and she has 3 in her right lobe. She is planning on getting 3 more in her left and 2 more in her right lobe. They look awesome and I wish she did them when she was younger as they look amazing

MissTrip82 · 02/10/2022 10:23

The general rule for me is that if I’ve heard of something, the trend is probably over.

Do what you want anyway.

OldTinHat · 02/10/2022 10:31

I've had three lobe piercings in each ear since I was 16 (51 now), two helix in one ear, one in the other.

mondaytosunday · 02/10/2022 10:37

Can can just about do one pair of earrings (though I have two holes in each year), can't be faffed about more. I got the second piercing in my early 20s when I had time (and could be bothered) to think about choosing coordinating earrings.
A friend (58) just got her nose pierced, but my son (19) ditched his nose ring as a pain to deal with.

GiantCheeseMonster · 02/10/2022 10:47

I have two in each lobe, and I had a helix last year but it got infected and was excruciatingly painful so had to come out. I was just unlucky - had it done at a really reputable studio and followed all the aftercare advice - but it’s put me off a bit. A shame as I really want one, and I’d love a nose piercing too but the thought of that getting infected is a bit scary.

Dazedandconfused10 · 02/10/2022 10:53

3 in each lobe, 3 helix one side the other has a helix, tragus and conch. I like them and will continue to poke holes in my ears as I see fit, it never occurred to me this might be seen as a trend or out of fashion.

Mol1628 · 02/10/2022 11:04

I’ve got my nose done, lobes three times on each side and my rook. I had three helix piercings too but they were just sore and getting irritated despite having them done for years so I’ve given up with them. Not worn jewellery for a few weeks in those and I think they’ve closed up.

I work at the hospital and piercings are very acceptable/normal.

LunaTheCat · 02/10/2022 23:04

Late 50’s and recently has 2nd lobe piercing ... tempted by more 🤣
It gets very expensive though... oohing and ahhing over Maria Tash but a curated ear can cost many many thousands!
