London theatre trip

Help! Going to London in a few weeks, out to a mid price steak restaurant and then the theatre.

What should I wear? Around 4 years ago we went and dressed up and looked out of place in the theatre but I don’t want to wear jeans to the restaurant.

Thanks :)

What ever you want to wear

Whatever you feel comfortable in

I would avoid anything sports or athletic leisure related. However, unless you taxi everywhere, comfortable shoes are a must. It pick leather flats rather than sports shoes.

As long as you are clean and tidy it really doesn't matter.

I can usually tell if someone is out of town when they get dressed up for the theatre.

@FunsizedandFabulous Haha yep that was me in my little black dress & heels …. glad it was dark!!

Trousers, a nice top with a blazer/jacket would be fine

BusySittingDown · 11/09/2022 19:39

I'd dress in something comfortable tbh. I'm always cold but find theatres boiling once you're in there.

I wouldn't go overboard, maybe a midi dress with boots or a blouse with smart jeans.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/09/2022 19:40

I was at the theatre last weekend and we went out for dinner beforehand. I wore a dress with trainers which was comfortable but a little more dressy than jeans.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/09/2022 19:41

But to be honest we were in London for my DD's 30th and I went to a Michelin starred restaurant also in a dress and trainers. London is pretty causal.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/09/2022 19:42

*casual.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/09/2022 19:43

Dress with smart trainers or maybe boots will be fine. Nicer than jeans.

Totally disagree. I've lived in central London for 30 years and always make the effort to get dressed up for the theatre (as do my London friends who actually work in theatre). Can't stand people who slouch into a theatre looking like they're spending the evening lying on their sofa at home (and then seem to behave as if they are).

TheOGCCL · 11/09/2022 19:56

London has become so casual. Quite unusual to see anyone dressed up at the theatre or in a restaurant and its normally older people who have always done it. Or as PP said out of towners.

I think it's a shame as it is a nice part of the experience but pretty much anything goes and its easy to look overdressed and out of place (and actually quite hard to look underdressed).

I'd wear dark jeans and a nice blouse with maybe sandals or boots.

All the theatres now have good Aircon/ fresh air pumped in. So they are much cooler than pre covid. A nice change!
