Help! I have NO winter footwear that doesn't hurt - bursitis

I desperately need some boots and trainers.
I have inter metatarsal bursitis in one foot. I've had an injection but that hasn't helped , in fact it's got worse recently. To the point that it hurts most of the time not just in particular shoes 😭 just varying degrees of pain depending on shoe.
I have sort of managed with cushioned sandals but obviously can't wear them for much longer!
I bought a pair of wide fit Skechers with memory foam sole but they hurt as well! It doesn't help that I don't actually have wide feet of course so my foot slips around in them. I'm taking them back but what the hell can I get if even they hurt?
So I need wide fit, round toe, cushioned sole. Do such things even exist?

Skechers are the worst! They made my plantar fasciitis much worse. I could barely walk for a whole summer after wearing them for a few weeks.

These days I only wear Fit Flop, some lovely styles, and am back exercising again with ASICS Gel Kayano and have no problems at all.

Talk to a podiatrist , they might give you recommendations or see an orthotist.

Coldhandscoldheart · 11/09/2022 07:49

what about something like hotter or is it padders? Also I’d consider seeing a podiatrist & see if an insole would help.a specialist one I mean.

Quveas · 11/09/2022 07:55

Cosyfeet are a specialist shoe company who produce deeper shoes rather than wider shoes. that allows you to insert orthotics or cushioned insoles. They are designed for people with foot problems so you might find them suitable. A fair number of mobility / disability specialist stock them so you may be able to find a place to try them on.

Keen presidio II are amazingly comfortable (but a bit steep on price, though if you buy from them direct you have a 30 day return window I believe).

BrownTableMat · 11/09/2022 08:04

Sketchers wrecked my ankles. They have no support, you’re just walking on cushions. I have arthritis in my big toe joint and the NHS physio made me some special insoles which I wear when it gets bad, and they help a lot.

My podiatrist said the best for foot pain is v solid structured shoes ( not light wobbly foam shoes). Always with laces not Velcro or elastic.

Shops that sell hiking boots are a good place to look. They often have walking shoes too that are designed to support your foot.

I absolutely understand that your first step when your feet are sore is to look for immediate relief. I encourage you to also find out what they hurt and do the work to strengthen them for long term relief.

Katy Bowmans's work is a great place to start

Find a local independent shoe shop and get a pair fitted…Yes even grown ups can get shoes fittings. I did that and found vionics were best for my feet. The brand I wanted to buy was not right for me.

Monsterjam · 11/09/2022 08:39

Would a barefoot shoe / boot be good! They are veery comfy

Chakraleaf · 11/09/2022 08:40

I wear sketchers arch fit and not had plantar pain since.

averythinline · 11/09/2022 08:43

Footsure do a metatarsal insole....which could help... but go to gp and get referral....to proper podiatrist ..
I did and it turns out there is a bursitis but also they identified the root causes...and am trying a different sort of insole..

Shoes recommended....definitely not sketchers.
Birkenstocks, Hoka, fitflop ...walking shoes
Or well fitting wide toebox...keen meindl...
Im trying a hotter pair (some not completely awful)..and i can fit insole in...

averythinline · 11/09/2022 08:44

Heavenly feet are another....Hoka are trainers....its the up curve that helps

Polgara2 · 11/09/2022 08:50

Oh thank you lots of things to look at! I will read all your suggestions now.
I should have said I do have an nhs orthotics appointment but everything is taking sooooooo long and I need something to wear in the meantime!
I am on dog walking duties next week and I am absolutely panicking about what I am going to wear.

Altras, flat, big toe box, cushioned, laces.

Physio said not to wear my Sketchers.

thesonicoscillator · 11/09/2022 09:01

I have found Fitflop boots and Vibae Helsinki boots to be the only things I can walk in without any pain. My top pair are defo Fitlop

1idea · 11/09/2022 09:04

Hoka trainers and if you buy direct from their website you can return them within 30 days if you don’t like them

Polgara2 · 12/09/2022 11:22

Those of you with insoles - do you take the original insole of the shoe out or do you place it on top?

OP posts:
Polgara2 · 12/09/2022 11:26

Ooh also do you reckon a wide fit or a just normal fit but go half or full size up would be less constricting on the toes? 🤔

OP I don't have any foot pain/physio knowledge so I may be in the wrong, but my best tip for winter comfort are these:

www.ugg.com/uk/classic-clear-mini%C2%A0boot/1113190.html

They are waterproof with a thick grippy sole. Inside is all sheepskin, under and around your foot, so it's like walking on a cloud! If Wellies went to heaven, basically.

Their returns policy is good so if you found them to be no good for your foot then I don't think they'd quibble over a refund.

Billybabs · 12/09/2022 12:15

I have Morton's neuroma in my right foot which I think affects the same area as your pain. Podiatrist recommended spenco brand insoles, RX orthotic three quarter length (so they don't crowd toes). They have to be the orthotic ones rather than the cushioned ones though or they don't work. Not too pricey and they make a big difference for me, I buy footwear a size up and put them on top of the existing insoles.

I also have bursitis in my left ankle (both my feet are arseholes) and nothing worked for that pain untill I bought some flexiseq max in the chemist. I was dubious as it sounds a bit flowery, but I was desperate and it's made an enormous difference! You really have to pay attention to the instructions for use though. Good luck

Minerbee · 12/09/2022 12:23

I took the insole out of some of my shoes & put the specialist one in instead. Some it fitted fine.
