How long is your hair?

I decided to grow mine during lockdowns, had mostly worn it mid length for many years, or up in a twist/clip.
My hair is a bit fuzzy which I tame with serum and either plait to dry or use a straightening brush to smooth it down - I'm not curly.

This year I have noticed the ends of my hair are so much thinner than the rest. So when it gets to my shoulder blades it is very fine and sparse. An example of this is when I braid it, the braid gets really thin from halfway down, if that makes sense?
I am wondering about cutting it to midlength to put some spring back into it. It would certainly appear thicker. I do like it long though, so it's a difficult decision.
My hair is very whispy by nature and kind of looks like gossamer as you go towards the ends, which isn't really that great outside of fairytales and theatre Grin

Does anyone else have this type of hair, and if so do you keep it blunter? I probably wouldn't go short-short, but considering a good few inches off, to where the thickness is at it's best.

My hair is nearly the same but not fuzzy and past my bra strap. I don't really care what the back of my head looks like as I can't see it. I hate going to the hairdressers.

Yes, it just means it's at its maximum length so the hairs higher up on your head aren't coming down far enough to make it thick lower down. You can either cut it a bit shorter or use a volumising product if you can find one that works. I find a leave in hair mask just on the ends helps a bit.

Thanks, i will look into that.

but this: I don't really care what the back of my head looks like as I can't see it.
is a philosophy I need to get on board with Grin

does this mean it won't grow any longer? Why aren't they coming down far enough? I was like this as a child so i presume it's just my hair, but it never did grow very, very long.

Most likely - mine is the same, won't go longer than approx my bra strap and I haven't had it cut for decades (I trim the split ends off occasionally). Everyone's hair has a genetically determined maximum length (hence you get occasional people who can grow it down to their knees) and there's nothing you can do to change it. You can minimise breakage to make the most of the length you have but if you are not genetically programmed to have waist length hair, unfortunately it won't happen.

That's interesting and helpful, thanks.
Come to think of it, it's never been longer than I have it now. No matter how many years I leave it. I had highlights a year ago and in the area where they've grown out it has grown a TON, but it is not actually longer!!!! How odd!
Luckily my highlights were only a shade lighter than my hair so the regrowth is nice enough to be getting on with. I need to accept it won't grow any more and cut the straggles off.

I haven't been to the hairdressers since 2019 January, I never liked going, and often trimed the ends my self and I can put a few highlights in myself too. It's now down to my bra stap at the back and I love it longer, i have straight style with a few shorter front layers like jennifer aniston

This is interesting, I want to find out more!

I always tend to cut mine when it’s a couple of inches past my boobs, it starts looking a bit raggedy at that stage. I’ve never tried growing it longer. My dd has hair down to her bottom!

Antarcticant · 10/09/2022 21:29

I’ve never tried growing it longer

The only way you can find out is not to cut it for several years (a trim is fine but don't cut off more than has grown since the last trim, obviously). When it stops getting longer, you will know it's reached its natural length.

OneFrenchEgg · 10/09/2022 21:31

I am fascinated by the genetic length. I'm growing mine and it's kind of stalled so I wonder if mine is shoulders only?

Fiveinthebed22 · 10/09/2022 21:37

This is about as long as mine goes, and I’m horrified at how it looks from the back in its natural state!

I think all hair thins out towards the ends in pleats though?

Sorry but your hair is perfect, you don't belong in my sad camp Grin

Must admit my hair never grew longer than my lower shoulder blade, ever. Never noticed this before now. After the top shoulder blade it tapers, and goes very thin and fine.

If I grab a handful of hair and chop it off, say 4 inches, what remains in my hand if so small and insignificant, i wonder how it made me feel like i had long hair! I wish I'd taken a photo, because 4 inches off my hair produces a few, straggly wisps.

I grew my hair for a bet once, I didn’t get it cut for 2 years & it grew from shoulders to waist length. I have a high waist though! I got bored & cut it short.
