Anyone gone grey then changed their mind ?

I'm so torn about what to do. Mid 50s and went fully grey over lockdown. It's now slightly wavy and shoulder length. Initially I liked it because it's in fairly good condition now but I'm really having a wobble at the moment. Last week I inadvertently caught sight of myself in a mirror and was shocked. I just looked so well..grey and washed out. A work colleague said she liked it. Another when asked reluctantly said it made me look older. Ds 2 14 said older but 'You still look nice' 🤔 and a good friend was non committal. OH isn't fussed....
What options are there for someone with slate grey hair ? Brorange or trusty highlights which I really cannot afford regularly ? Or maybe a better haircut ? Any advice ?

I'm 55, I went grey a few years ago, thought it looked ok but then I had my photo taken where I was at the back of a group, I looked like a ghost hovering in the background. Dyed my hair that same day, lol. I'm waiting a few years and then may try again.

Dillydollydingdong · 13/09/2022 00:23

Nice 'n Easy does it for me

I’m in my 40s. I went grey for a few years but have now returned back to dark brown. I much prefer my coloured hair and have accepted there will be a financial cost to keeping my hair coloured for the foreseeable future, I didn’t feel great with grey hair, as much as I wanted to free myself from the pressure of colouring and be more accepting of the aging process.

VividlyReneredLandscape · 13/09/2022 04:15

Ahh.

The aging process....

It's going to be.

Yes. I've 'given up'.

Completely!

WOW! You look stunning 😍

Here is a photo of my purple low lights taken by my hairdresser, I love them!

I love this!

notprincehamlet · 13/09/2022 22:53

I've tried stepping away from the dye but I look like John Major's Spitting Image puppet. A decent cut and colour and the world seems like a less miserable place.

NancyDrooo · 13/09/2022 22:56

Yes, a friend went grey, until someone innocently commented on a photo of her “your mum looks well” 😁

JaneJeffer · 13/09/2022 23:09

@Ilovetocrochet your photo made me think of this because I was staring at it not understanding what I was seeing and then eventually realised you had a mask on 👻

I started to grow out my highlights in lockdown but "broke" when it ended.

I'm not fussed about being grey per se, but I think my hair wasn't grey enough to look good.

It's naturally dark blond and my grey is only about 30%.

It simply "made" a colour that wasn't complimentary to my skin tone.

So I've gone back to highlights but spoken to my colourist to "transition" more effectively between my natural colour and the grey with flattering tones. It's a lot better and with highlights the roots blend in really well (so it's not a major time/cost investment).

Upshot I think it's my hair and I do with it what makes me feel comfortable/happy/confident.

Going grey and changing my mind is no different imho than deciding to grow it really long then having a pixie cut, or growing out a fringe and having it cut back in etc...

Thanks @FurAndFeathers.

And here's my hair! I've not given up.

Grey hair can be very positive.

I adore myself.

I've always really liked myself.

Getting older isn't necessarily a negative thing.

You look amazing!

StillMedusa · 14/09/2022 20:28

I'm nearly 55, stopped colouring 5 years ago... and regularly regret it Grin but I cannot face the idea of the cost and time to go back to it.
I'm not glamorous, (sadly) and my hair is white at the front with dark underneath and swirls of grey throughout. But I still don't think I look like I've 'given up'?!!!! )(pic right now in pjs, )
I think I look like someone in their mid 50s... guess what , I am Grin

You look fabulous. That’s a great thick head of lovely shiny hair!

umm.. where did I say getting old was a negative thing ?

It’s pretty clear you adore yourself 😁

but honestly your hair looks straggly and unkempt.
a decent blunt or layered cut to tidy it up would look loads better.

I think that applies to any hair, but especially when transitioning to grey/growing out colour or introducing a new style and that was the advice I gave to the OP Otherwise it absolutely can look accidental or like you haven’t bothered.

You’ve chosen to assume that my advice to the original poster is somehow intended for you and entirely ignored anything positive I’ve said. Feel free to continue to pick and choose your narrative 🤷‍♀️

You very clearly have a nice layered cut (unaffected by your PJs)

intetesting the sensitivities on this thread though! Who’d have thought that suggesting a decent haircut would have been so controversial!

Badger1970 · 14/09/2022 20:47

I grew mine out about 4 years ago, and honestly really struggled with the change. So like an idiot I used a box dye over lockdown and went a warm chocolate brown even though naturally I'm a cool deep brunette. I then ended up having blonde highlights all over.......... and I'm now back to growing it all out again as it's absolutely buggered the condition of it.

I deeply regret colouring it again.

BlackCoffeeAndToast · 14/09/2022 21:02

I'm early 40s and the white hair is multiplying at pace. I have recently seriously debated dyeing it at last, but I still can't bring myself to bother. I have light brown hair and the greys are definitely a bright white so far. The only hair dyeing I do regularly is my eyebrows - I can't bear pale / white brows.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 14/09/2022 21:11

I grew mine out during lockdown. I like it when I look in the mirror but photos are a real shock. I look much older and washed out. However I just cannot face the expense and hassle of going back to having it coloured. It grows fast and I get badger stripes after three weeks. I also don’t need to blow dry it now.

I feel the same

Girlintheframe · 15/09/2022 08:55

I was one cut away from having a full head of grey but changed my mind.

I'm approaching 50 and was already feeling a bit old/reflective/panicked. I wanted to love the grey but just didn't. I'm sallow skinned and I just looked unwell unless I had on bright makeup. I also felt like I didn't look like 'me' and the outside didn't match how I felt inside.

I think I will definitely go grey at some point but not for another few years.
