What to wear with wide leg jeans

I bought some lovely wide leg jeans in the sale from Me&Em. But as much as I love them, I can't seem to figure out what to wear with them! Help!

Particularly tops - I've obviously been living in skinny jeans for eternity, but what tops go with the wide leg jeans - none of mine seem to :(. Although mostly I live in t-shirts and sweatshirts and hoodies, maybe it's a different cut of t-shirt?

I'm waiting for an expert to come along as have been wondering similar. I assume we will need slim-fitting tops to balance the silhouette, rather than baggy sweats and hoodies. I have a stylish friend who wears hers with fitted knitwear and a blazer. I think it's hard to find the right footwear.

Openrelationship · 10/09/2022 11:08

Fitted tops tucked in or cropped.

im stuck on footwear!

Wetcappuccino · 10/09/2022 11:09

Slim or straight fitting tops/ knitwear. I think the key is that the bottom of the top should not sit any lower than hip level.

Me too - I’m waiting for someone on S&B to come up with the answer 😁

Just a suggestion, but if they don't look right with your other clothes, and you can't work out any form of suitable footwear, perhaps give them a miss?

I love jeans and would like to move on from skinnies to something more current, but would like some advice on appropriate footwear. I remember feeling the same years ago when I moved from bootcut to skinnies. I'd rather give something new a try than stick with familiar favourite styles forever anyway.

I have wide leg jeans on today. Love them. Wearing with a tight high neck bodysuit and converse. In winter I'll wear with DMs and fitted ribbed jumpers tucked in

foxofthefells · 10/09/2022 13:58

I wear neater, shorter tops, so tshirts or jumpers or thermals in winter that aren't long in the body, so they sit nicely at the waist or tuck in easily.

A neat fitted cardi works well too, so in reality you are gonna get used to showing your bum shape, which many of is covered loosely when wearing skinny jeans. And since these jeans/trousers are not tight fitting, you make sure to choose a pair that has decently placed pockets so your derierre looks lovely Smile

Alternatively, a long baggy jumper can still look great with wide leg jeans, I see plenty young women doing this, it depends on what you prefer. I like to wear neat tshirts or jumpers and a long wool coat, or a short jacket. Sometimes a neat vest or cami with a soft, cashmere boyfriend cardi.

With footwear I go for converse or my usual docs. A hiker boot looks great with wide jeans (and a chunky sock) as do heeled boots, chunky trainers or platforms.
To be honest, anything goes really, I think it is just getting used to a different silhouette, which is a bonus for me as I missed it so much during the skinny jeans years. I am so happy to not have to plaster everything against my anatomy like a disco queen from the 80's any more!

Look for fitted plain tees with long sleeves for winter, smart or casual (white company or Hush for example) a nice, long corduroy coat, a long puffer if you like trends, a decent fitted Henley top in cotton or kitted, a slouchy but shorter length cashmere or merino jumper.

As for the winter rain excuses, i think it's all confirmation bias.
We are so used to seeing leggings and skinnies with boots in winter that it has become hardwired into us the any wider trouser wont work!

It's bullshit.

A pair of wide or loose jeans with lace up or chelsea boots is going to suffer getting wet exactly the same as skinnies and boots. I promise you, I don't drive, so I get drenched a lot in colder weather Grin
I prefer less fitted bottoms in rain as they don't stick to my legs like clingwrap and make my skin all puffy and mottled.

It's all a mind thing, really. Just opt for a good leg length then you don't scrape the fabric on the ground. If you like slouchy trousers just shorten the back of them with a tack here or there to keep off the floor, or choose a slightly more cropped length (ankle not calf). Most contemporary footwear looks great with wider bottoms.

Completely depends on your body shape and proportions. Those with very lean thighs can wear baggier knitwear/sweatshirts that come down lower and with sneakers and look very louche and cool. Those with bigger thighs and shorter legs need to tread a little more carefully. Shorter tops or tuck in (or do a French tuck) or a narrow top half like a rib singlet type thing with a blazer, shoes with a heel to lengthen legs. Heavier thighs on shorter leg will create a leg shape that can look blocky and unflattering as the leg goes from the sides part of the thigh straight down creating a very wide and short rectangle. If the legs are longer then the rectangle is longer iyswim

I'm wearing cropped wide leg jeans today with a slightly fitted tee tucked in and Birkenstocks. On cooler days I'll wear trainers and a short sweatshirt or light jumper tucked in.

cannaethink · 10/09/2022 20:55

I wear mine with fitted tucked in tops, or tops that stop right on the waist band.
I wear Vans with them. If it’s particularly wet then I just wouldn’t wear them, and stick to mom jeans with docs instead.

Mercurial123 · 11/09/2022 07:38

I have some wide leg trousers from Raey in cotton/linen mix and have been wearing them with the thin knit jumpers from COS and trainers.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 11/09/2022 08:15

Yep footwear for winter is hard with wide leg jeans. In summer sandals are great, in winter it’s a struggle. Especially if the jeans are slightly cropped (which is better for winter). Slightly longer wide legs, go with more as you cover up the shoe a lot, but then you get soggy jeans.

I got some navy New Balance trainers and some chunky soled black boots, which I do think go well. I also have some black ankle boots that surprisingly work too. I think you’ve just got to try on lots of different things and see what works for you.

However I also bought a pair of more tapered jeans as I could get these to work with much more of my existing footwear. And last year I wore sports leggings a lot (I’m pretty active) and these worked well with hiking boots or trainers or sheepskin boots or whatever I normally wear. To be fair as much as I dislike skinny jeans now, they really worked well in winter with boots or any footwear that is better suited to UK weather.

With tops, cropped, fitted or tucked in as you want to define the waist to give some shape. I made a lot of jumpers work by just tucking them in, where they would have just been untucked with skinny jeans.

WhereAreWeNow · 11/09/2022 08:20

Cropped or fitted tops. I find a high neckline works well (e.g. A fitted polo neck in winter).

StrangerThanMostFiction · 11/09/2022 08:27

DD wears fitted skinny rib type jumpers tucked in and platform Converse, she looks lovely. I think it's a trend I'll sit out, despite being taller than DD and the same size, I just don't like the look or feel of tucked in jumpers (on me) and my thighs look chunky. I've gone back to skinny flares.

dgirluk · 11/09/2022 09:27

Thanks everybody! I'm old enough to remember them the first time around, and they do get wet at the bottoms in the winter compared to skinnies, but that's ok, I can live with that or just not wear them those days.

I'll read properly and digest, thanks so much - I live in DMs in the winter but hadn't considered wearing them with those.

I'm tall (5'9) but not slim thighs, but a slim waist and tummy. I think something fitted and tucked in sounds like it will work, but I like the idea of the cardigan as well - been looking out for something like that for a while.

Agree with slim, fine knit jumpers/tops tucked in works. Or boxy cropped tops.
I wear wide leg jeans with hi top converse - the ones with a slightly thicker sole balance it out a bit.
I always just use Pinterest to get ideas @dgirluk - seeing what other people are wearing always gives me inspiration.
