Do you always just settle for the least worse pair?

Of shoes, I mean. Do you ever find shoes that are comfy, fit well and look nice, or is it always a case of taking the least worst-fitting-borderline-acceptable-looking pair?

(can you tell I went shoe shopping today?!)

I only ever buy shoes I love the look of that are also comfortable. The only exception is work shoes where I definitely go for comfort first with less concern over whether I like how they look.

TheOGCCL · 05/09/2022 21:24

Bit of a holy grail but I always persevere. If I buy uncomfortable shoes they just won’t be worn as I walk a lot and if I buy shoes I don’t think I look good in, I won’t wear them either.

Trainers seem very acceptable in lots of settings now, they tend to be nice looking and inherently comfortable.

It can be very annoying as sometimes you only find out shoes are uncomfortable after you’ve worn them for a day.

I do hate shoe shopping but over the years have found some brands that tend to suit my feet.

dudsville · 05/09/2022 21:37

I used to, but then i learned this was why I never could pull outfits together - i kept keeping things that were just ok. Persevere. Learn what it is you really want in footwear (and clothes!) And don't keep anything about which you aren't certain.

where do you find such a thing?!

I was looking for trainers!! I hate this new trend of marking everything as unisex. Instead of having a small choice of large ladies shoes, you now have everything over 41 labelled as "unisex" when in fact they're just slightly more colourful men's shoes i.e far too wide and the footbed and heel all wrong and far fewer true women's shoes!

What shoes do you want? My feet hate me but I get on with new balance
Some Nike
Assics for exercise
Some primark trainers are super comfy as copies of Skechers and other branded .
Dm for winter and ugg leather boots!
Loads of choice really . Can you just go to Schuh and spend ages trying some on!

ShirleyJackson · 06/09/2022 10:09

I have brands that I tend to rely on.

Birkenstocks for summer.
Stan Smiths.
DMs.
ASICS for running.
Converse.

I occasionally stray but usually end up disappointed.

SchoolInForeignLands · 06/09/2022 10:43

Shops never have anything in my size.

I'm a 44 in (asics) running shoes, 43 in DM's and 42.5-43 in most others.
I tried some Nike and New Balance but they were men's fit and far too wide. I also tried a 42.5 Lowa men's Locarno (I have worn through the sole of the women's 42.5 Locarno as they have been my daily shoe for the past couple of years ) but the cut of the shoe was wrong and I couldn't walk in them.

I find you get what you pay for with shoes. Buy cheap, buy twice as they say. I tend to buy one pair a year but will spend over the odds on them - Russell and Bromley, Havaianas, Birkenstocks etc. Reputable brands tend to make the comfiest and most stylish shoes in my experience. Weird because I never buy branded clothing really, but quality matters more with shoes.

AmbushedByCake1 · 06/09/2022 11:47

I only wear shoes that are comfy and in my opinion, stylish! I wear Birkenstocks in the summer, Superga are my go to trainers and I wear Sorel boots in the winter.

Enko · 06/09/2022 11:53

I find it near impossible. On top of that I loathe trainers and boots and they seem to be the holy grail of ideal for everyone for me they just =boiling hot feet that makes me feel unwell (not kidding my feet has serious issues 🙂)

One pair I use I get on with is. Algeria Paloma. But they are expensive. I've tried some loaftes from Vionic but i dont find they last well.

I'm still looking.

Ha ha ha never have I not understood a thread more! My favourite thing in the world is shoe shopping!

FunnyTalks · 06/09/2022 12:10

Have you tried Nike Air force one? I'm a 7.5 /8 and find them really comfortable and not too boat-like. I totally get what you're saying, never been able to wear Adidas shoes for precisely this reason.

At the moment I have Hoff trainers, Veja and Converse high tops - all of which I find comfortable and I have wide feet.
I tend to go for the same brands if I know they are comfy and suit wide feet. I have DM boots (fur lined Chelsea ones and Lace-ups) which are really comfortable. In summer I live in flip-flops.
Obviously what I think look nice may differ from what you think looks nice but it's just a case of finding a shoe I like the look of and then seeing if it's comfortable.
I wear scrubs at work so usually just wear trainers. Admittedly I don't really have 'office' shoes and have never found a pair of brogues or loafers that are particularly comfortable. 'Going out' shoes are more tricky as well so again I stick to brands that do a wide fit.

I agree with this.

I wear havianas, dm boots and air max. Don't deviate anymore.

No way am I squeezing my trotters into hard / uncomfortable/ high heeled shoes anymore.

5128gap · 06/09/2022 14:07

Comfy, right price, look good. Pick two.
Which two i pick depends on the occasion.

EspeciallyDivided · 06/09/2022 17:20

Yes, shoe shopping is one of my least favourite occupations style and beauty wise. Have ended up with so many compromises because it’s almost impossible to get comfy and looking good let alone factoring in cost. I used to let looks trump comfort but not any more, I tend to live in Birkenstocks from about April to October and trainers/flat boots the rest of the year, very rarely wear actual shoes because of the difficulty in finding comfy ones that aren’t frumptastic.
