Outfit for York races in October?

Please help me dress me!

I'm short, fat, barrel shaped. Big boobs, big belly, no waist, wide bum, awful legs. Size 16-18. Would prefer to wear trousers & jacket but open to a dress if midi length or can be worn with tights.

I have no idea where to start. I'm not a dressing up kind of person, I usually wear shapeless tunics and leggings or jeans and a t-shirt.

Hi OP

What’s your budget?

What about something like this?

Or how about a jumpsuit? This one is nice, I think the style would suit as it might help to give you some shape at the waist.

I'd suggest something like a midi dress, ruched under the boobs, in a heavy satiny fabric. I'd wear that with perhaps Doc Martens and a leather jacket. Sorry, no links to anything. What I would say is don't dress as if you're a wedding guest, with a fascinator and high heels. A lot of the time the ground will be damp, with heels sinking in. Also, by the time the racegoers actually head off to the racecourse surely heels would already be killing your feet. I say this as someone who uses the pub which is overtaken by racegoers, so I get to observe them.

I also think jumpsuit with wide leg fit might be nice if you're worried about your legs. Not sure what your budget is but something like this?

Don't wear heels and it can be getting colder by the end of the race meeting.

Pootles34 · 05/09/2022 09:58

Agree it can get really cold in October - the wind really whips across the course. A lot of the young girls all wear tiny dresses and heels - they look so cold!

I would go for more of a country, tweedy look myself but that's probably horribly unfashionable!

Thanks everyone.

I'm not sure I could pull off a dress and DMs. I like that suit. Jumpsuit is a nice idea but I worry it would just enhance my belly.

Budget is probably only £100 for the whole outfit, doubt I will wear any of it ever again but it's a big event for the people I'm going with and they are all getting dressed up so I need to make an effort.

What shoes would I wear with that boohoo suit if not heels?

You need a smart coat really imo... do you have anything that might fit the bill? Is there a sit down meal or is it the usual bar - parade ring - bookies - grandstand - bar circuit? (in which case you will probably wear that coat all afternoon).

Work2live · 06/09/2022 17:41

@Nij you could go for a chunky, low heeled boot? Loads of options around in that sort of style at the moment. Would protect your feet if it rained, and a chunky heel will be easier to walk in and won’t sink into grass like a stiletto heel.

Get yourself on Vinted. If you search for special occasion dresses in your size, you can see photos of how they actually look. I have 2 on there that I paid ££ for and only wore once. Even if you don't want used, at least you'll have a better idea of what will look good.
