How do you rate Doc Martens for comfort?

They've never really existed on my radar before because I was never a fan of their classic style, however their range seems to have expanded quite a lot.

I'm going to NYC on holiday in a couple of months and I'm looking for boots that I can walk around for miles in during the day, but still look acceptable for non fancy but still nice evening out.

I prefer to pack really light so I'd rather not take more than one pair of shoes! But I've never owned Docs before and so many people seem to mention the requirement to break them in it makes me nervous that they're painful!

The Leonora, Chelsea boot fur-lined style are incredibly comfortable

Brendabigbaps · 04/09/2022 17:09

Look elsewhere unless you have a month to wear them in, that means wearing them everyday for a few hours at a time. Once worn in there comfortable

blockpavingismynightmare · 04/09/2022 17:09

My own experience of Docs is you have to break them in. I have two pairs in Pascal leather and could not wear them for a length of time unless they had been broken in. It takes ages, and I have the socks !

BuenoSucia · 04/09/2022 17:11

I can still mentally feel the pain from the first pair I broke in in 1986.

youre a doc’s virgin so your plan is Terrible!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 04/09/2022 17:14

Normal ones I couldn’t even walk let alone break them in. Pascal Virginia 1460s were broken in within a week and are mega comfortable now.

Livinthedream84 · 04/09/2022 17:17

The fur lined chelsea boots made me go ooooooo when I put them on for the first time. They are super comfy and don’t need breaking in like traditional docs. If you go for any go for these.

clarepetal · 04/09/2022 17:18

You must break them in. Then they are great, it's all I wear

PurpleDaisies · 04/09/2022 17:18

The soft leather ones are brilliant from pretty much straight away.

M+S have some very chunky boots in store at the moment…

littleducks · 04/09/2022 17:20

These type with soft leather don't need breaking in www.drmartens.com/uk/en_gb/1460-pascal-black/p/13512006?gclid=Cj0KCQjwmdGYBhDRARIsABmSEeNKgnmpudX-bVV_gZdbthXn1c17jD2m7gJd5M4A0TgqeGqrGYIUvDgaArJaEALw_wcB

I've been ok with fur lined type too

DillDanding · 04/09/2022 17:23

I have the Pascal DMs which required no breaking-in whatsoever and I could walk 100 miles in them - they are so comfortable.

I also have their rigger boots and safety lace-up boots for work. Sweet Jesus - they nearly got the better of me. But once broken in and my feet were annihilated, they are super comfy!

forlornlorna1 · 04/09/2022 17:23

I've got the soft leather pascal. Only pair I've ever had that didn't need wearing in. Very comfy

NiceTwin · 04/09/2022 17:25

Have a look at Lanx shoes.
They are fairly pricey but oh so comfortable from day one.
I live mine.

YellowBusPlaymobile · 04/09/2022 17:32

Oh no it's not looking good! Although I do have a good couple of months before I go I really really don't want to have to break anything in! Whilst the fur lined ones sound nice, I worry about my extremely sweaty feet in them!
Looks like I'll have to think of an alternative!

Once broken in, fine. Brand new? Like a thousand little razor blades attacking my ankles.

Buy secondhand, already broken in!

mumofthemonsters808 · 04/09/2022 17:52

Yes agree, they need serious breaking in, my Husband used a hammer on the back ankle bit as they murdered me.I now pull them out every Winter and could walk for miles in them.Ive had mine 10 years now and they are in tip top condition I nearly died when I saw how expensive they ‘d gone.

abovedecknotbelow · 04/09/2022 18:06

Get the soft ones, no breaking in required. I'm a flip fop and docs sort, don't wear anything else.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 04/09/2022 18:09

They support ie give money to Mermaids , to enable them to supply puberty suppression drugs to children.

just saying….

Fe2O3Girl · 04/09/2022 18:13

If you want Doc Martens, buy Solovair boots, the original UK manufacturer. Much better quality.

Rub conditioner or vazaline on the inside of the heel. Thick socks and lace them up properly not loosely. The Black and Cherry Red brake in quickly IME. But they are worth it in the long run.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 04/09/2022 18:26

All the ones I have now are pascal and didn't need breaking in

Magenta82 · 04/09/2022 18:33

I always say that they need a blood sacrifice. Once you have worn them in and the blisters have healed they are really comfortable.

Mossygreenchypre · 04/09/2022 18:34

Grafters Monkey boots might be better.
