Orthotics and brogues in children's sizes

If your children need orthotics, where do you get their school shoes from?

I have small feet and a bad back which means I need orthotics. I'm trying to find some smart(ish) work shoes at the minute, but because I have size 1.5 (Euro 34) feet, I need junior sizes.

Some Geox shoes just arrived and they're not deep enough for the insole. I really felt I'd given up buying the Geox - they're not exactly things of beauty! Not really sure what the next step is... please not the velcro leather trainers my nan used to wear - I'm not quite ready for that at 33!

Super grateful for any pointers which can help me find some brogues which might accommodate the orthotics whilst not looking completely dreadful...

It required a long trek around every shoe shop there was to find ones that were deep enough or wide/narrow enough to keep the insert in. No one brand could be trusted. Sorry. I know that's not what you want to hear. Prepare to spend an afternoon somewhere with different brands of shoes with your insert in hand. There will be something out there for you.
I praised the day DS didnt need them anymore.

I feared as much. Thank you for your advice! I bet all the shoe shops have been absolutely ransacked with back to school as well...

You need a shoe with a fastening that you can’t pull off your foot WITHOUT undoing the fastening.

If you can pull the shoe off or it’s loose on the heel your foot won’t be in contact with the orthotic during the stance phase of gait and the orthotic only works in stance phase. It renders the orthotic useless.

When I first got orthotics I went for lace up shoes or boots and often need a larger size to compensate. Skechers trainers work well, but it is a case of trying them out. The orthotics do settle into the shoe over time, so I've found shoes that slip slightly when I try them on often settle. Tbh I usually keep my orthotics for trainers and boots, and buy shoes and sandals with ready made orthotic insoles such as Strive, Birkenstock's or Vionic shoes although I'm not sure what size they start.
