Neutral styling for a summer colouring

I’ve been following a few instagram people lately and love the neutral tailored look that a lot are wearing - camel blazers, white T-shirts, tan jumpers kind of thing. I really like ExtraPetite’s style, and am a similar size to her, so that’s the kind of look I’m aiming for, BUT I have cool colouring (probably a ‘summer’ if you are into that) and look like a corpse in any shade of beige. How can I recreate the look with different neutrals? And can anyone suggest someone to follow that doesn’t just wear (shades of) beige but still focuses on neutrals? Thank you 💐

I think grey would work instead of tan/camel.
White is fine as it’s cool. Black might be a bit harsh, so potentially navy.
I’m warm so steer clear of both grey and white, and black. I think it’s harder to get that minimalist aesthetic with warm colouring actually as colours such as orange or teal throw it off a bit.

It’s really hard isn’t it? Grey and navy are both colours that work for me, but I always feel a bit drab in just shades of grey… would they work together do you think? Love navy but there doesn’t seem to be much around this year!

I'm similar cool colouring and I love the neutral aesthetics of camels and beiges but it is really unflattering on me. Agree that Gary, navy, black and white other way to go. Also I can sometimes get away with taupe, provided it's not warm. I know what you mean by feeling drab in grey but it doesn't have to be - it really looks great with a whole range of other cool toned colours.

Also one tip which I heard is that with colours the thing that matters is what colour you have close to your face. So if you really love camels and beiges maybe by a lovely pair of camel trousers or skirt would still work for you?

Yes that’s a good point, could try a camel bottom (not a toe, that’s never a good look 😉). Will have a scout around for some nice navy and grey bits as well - I want a softer look than black and white but not so soft that it’s really dull!

I'm a winter and also look like death in camel, beige, etc! I wear silvery grey but never charcoaly grey. I also choose white over cream, and some navy. Not necessarily a neutral but could work well alongside the look - lilac or very light blue?

Have a look at this screen shot I took on Instagram - can’t remember who from though! I have the same dilemma and thought this would help.

Oooh now that is useful. Hadn’t really thought that cool beige might be a thing! I’ll try and find where that’s from. I like the idea of layering light blues/lilacs as well - they are good colours for me and I’m thinking different shades could work…

I know, I never really thought I could pull off the beige colours, but now I think it’s worth a try. I just need a chance to browse/try on clothes. Someone I follow who uses a cool toned neutral colour palette is useless_dk on Instagram, and I think she’s a summer.

I’ve been looking at this blazer in “dark beige” and I think it might be cool toned. www.arket.com/en_gbp/women/tailoring/product.oversized-wool-hopsack-blazer-beige.1029561002.html

Just looked at that blazer again - and there are two different shades that say dark beige which is not helpful! The one styled with a green shirt I’d say is warm, it’s the other one I think is cool.

Askinvillarblues · 03/09/2022 13:40

It’s so hard to tell the tone from a screen, isn’t it? I think that blazer looks cool as well, but am not 100% sure. I’ve followed useless_dk on instagram as well - I like the idea of a more sustainable wardrobe, so will hopefully get some ideas for buying less but better quality. I’ve done that this summer I think - bought a couple of plain T-shirts from Cos which were more than I’d usually spend on a T-shirt, but I’ve found I’ve worn them so much more often than my more ‘fashiony’ ones.

Thank you! This is really helpful. That took me down a bit of a rabbit hole with colours and I found this page which looked good for ideas for neutral summer colours: Neutral colours for soft summer
