Long, warm, non-bulky dressing gown

I feel like I want this every year and never find it. So, I own: a short jersey dressing gown. Looks lovely, nice for flitting about in during summer, not much use the rest of the time.

Long, cotton cyberjammies dressing gown. My most worn - I love the length and it’s easy to wear, looks good and covers up really well too. But too thin for winter.

Knee-length M&S fleecy dressing gown - very, very warm and snuggly but I hardly ever wear it as I get far too hot and feel constricted - can’t bend arms properly, comes untied etc etc.

What I want is something in between the two last ones - a nice long, thin ish material, easy to wear gown but that has a bit of warmth. I just can’t wear fleece or towelling as I get SO hot so quickly! I’m thinking like a quilted cotton type maybe? But do they even make those? There’s a lot of teddy material ones that I know would
make me sweat immediately.

The white company makes lovely robes if your budget will stretch as they can be £££.
Here is a lovely waffled cotton one which isn’t too bad but maybe a bit thin for winter?
I managed to get one of their cashmere ones in the sale one year so worth keeping an eye out for it as they’re lovely and warm but not sweaty.
Otherwise this might work and is on sale!

Boppertini · 01/09/2022 12:15

Hmm maybe ignore me as I saw the last one has fleece lining, might be too much.

AtomicBlondeRose · 01/09/2022 12:18

Actually the fleece one looked ok as it seems more like a hoodie sort of weight rather than a full-on fleecy thing. I could stretch to that price range for something that exactly fitted the bill so I might have a look if I’m near one of their shops. The waffle ones always look uncosy to me? But I’ve never had one so I might be completely
wrong! I do think they’re the right sort of weight.

What about searching for a long line cardigan with belt, rather than a dressing gown? Get one that’s a few sizes too big.

minipie · 01/09/2022 12:46

I like the look of this which is like a full length hoodie

Downside is it would have to go on over your head, but on the plus side there’s no risk of it gaping or coming undone.

AtomicBlondeRose · 01/09/2022 12:52

I do like the long cardigans but I don’t think they’d stay done up properly because they’re not designed to wrap around so much. And I won’t necessarily be wearing anything underneath 😳

Now then @minipie , that’s a bit of a curveball! That actually looks kind of what I want but if I started to get too hot it might feel claustrophobic!

I have a wool one which I bought from Moshulu, but I think it is made by Woolovers.
It is lovely and warm, but not too warm, as wool is temperature-regulating.

supperlover · 19/09/2022 21:50

I bought this one last year. Expensive but long, warm and not bulky-

Oh I could have written the same thread. I've ditched my fleece dressing gown (for all the reasons you stated) but my cotton summer one is a bit thin. Liking the look of that Joules one.

Now on the other important topic of the moment, SLIPPERS! Mine are just wearing out. I like mules or ones you can easily slip on - slipper must be faff free but warm. Also need to have plastic bottom for popping out to the bins etc. @AtomicBlondeRose have you found such an item - that you can then wear with your perfect dressing gown? Grin

JaceLancs · 19/09/2022 22:02

I have a wool cashmere mix from woolovers
Just size up to get the wrap around factor
I love mine so much will be ordering another in a different colour this year as soon as they have an offer on
last year they were £79 each but did a buy 2 for £85 so bought one for DD as well

CCSS15 · 19/09/2022 22:04

Full length cashmere will do it but obviously not a cheap option although I think woolovers had some in the sale as per PP

A lot of good recommendations here to look at tomorrow when I get the chance.

@FrancisTheGreat I can recommend slippers - I wear these which are admittedly a bit “old lady” looking but look perfectly fine on and have been admired by many for their lack of falling-offness, sturdy sole and general practicality. www.houseofslippers.co.uk/gbs-audrey-ladies-slippers-ocean-p12840

@AtomicBlondeRose I can't do it, they are too old lady despite their practicality Grin the search continues!

My absolute bugbear, Room 101 is dressing fiend to the knee... just why??? Surely the whole pint is to not be draughty? Yet it's the holy grail. I have a beautiful, ankle length, velvety robe from Next which I've had for about 5 years. I just had a quick look and can't see anything longer than calf length

I always come back to these slippers Francis

I'm on my fourth pair, but I have Plantar fasciitis so am restricted by that.

TheRookie · 19/09/2022 22:27

M&S mule slippers with support are the one! They even machine wash

catfunk · 19/09/2022 22:40

@FrancisTheGreat how about sheepskin birks ?
I also love my mahabis

cormorant5 · 19/09/2022 22:44

I made a cotton one, it is quite a dense material. It is long and wrap over. My friend helped me, we modified the pattern to give more overlap and has two inner ties. One under right armpit and other just on my knee, it doesn't gape open.
The pattern is for a man's shirt and variations.
Do be careful about length I trod on the skirt of mine on the stairs, didn't fall far, no blood, spilled cup of tea only. Four inches removed, Solved.
On the very coldest days I wear my lighter shorter summer one underneath.

I will look for Pattern.

seafish · 19/09/2022 22:44

I'm also on the hunt for a similar dressing gown, the waffle one from the white company looks great. However I'm trying to be more budget conscious so will see if I can find a much cheaper alternative.
