I really need help ! Dd has wavy shoulder length hair with a fringe and so far wr have muddled along with her hair down or a pony tail for school.
She really wants to try something else for starting year 7 but I have short ish hair and no clue !

Have watched countless you tube videos but nothing is as easy as they make it look .

Can anyone give me some ideas / pointers please ?

Half pony tail? Half pony tail flipped round to make a sort of roll thing? A low pony tail flipped round to make a roll thing?

as ton can see, I am also not much cop at this but those are my go to styles. With the flip roll you do the pony then dig to make a gap in between the scalp and the band. Then flip the tail in under and through the hole.

Thanks this is helpful I think it's what her hairdresser did recently and said was super easy but I wasn't there to see how she did it !
DD mentioned a fishtail which seems similar

Also are there particular brushes anyone would recommend for taking her hair we use tangle teezers at the moment but her hair often looks very wild !

My daughter has an Afro and when her hair is wet, and slathered in conditioner I brush it with the plug in hot brush.. once a week, or month before braids.. also shwarzkop do a smoothing oil for £5 pounds, with no nasty chemicals..

I have a spray bottle with dregs of conditioner and water. I use this to spray the hair wet/damp before any styling. I use a tangle tweezer or a bristle brush for proper shining and styling.

I am a fraud in that my children look like they have been dragged through a hedge. But I feel your pain! Doing these things makes the hedge look less hedgey

French plait. Simpler version to fishtail plait.
Either a single one, or part hair down the middle and do one each side.
Get her to make a friend who will do it for her 😄

Or, if plaits are tricky. Part down middle and then section hair and secure with an elastic so you have a ponytail but just on the top third, section again, secure again and then one at the nape. So you have 3 ponytails but all hair is caught by the next elastic too. You can finish either with 2 pigtails or one ponytail at the nape. Easy. 😂

It sounds like you need to stop brushing her hair all of the time and start treating it like its curly (which is probably actually is, not wavy).

Plait or tie her hair back when it's wet. Use hair spray to keep it smooth once it's up. If she wants to wear it down, wet it and apply lots of gel before scrunching it up and letting it dry naturally. Never brush if between washes (unless putting it up, but wet it to brush it).

Thanks for all the ideas and advise - we managed something for her first day but she arrived home with it down so need to keep trying some of these ideas.
I like the conditioner and water spray suggestion too.

According to Dts starting y7 next week it must be up in a claw clip.

Bunce1 · 03/09/2022 14:31

Straight down in Arbil lavinge style sheets, or in a claw clip.

GrimDamnFanjo · 03/09/2022 14:41

Try her with the curly girl method.
Space buns are easy to do!

FurAndFeathers · 04/09/2022 09:36

Another one saying try curly girl. She likely has beautiful curls waiting to come out. Much nicer than frizz

Shinyandnew2022 · 04/09/2022 13:39

Interesting I ordered claw clips as thought that might be easy - they arrived and are huge but will maybe downsize and try again !

Also very interested In so many saying she might have curly hair that needs treating differently . I don't know I think it is more that my hair is short and always been dead straight I just don't 'get' long hair - but will read up on curly girl, my sister has gorgeous curls maybe need to get her opinion as to whether curls are lurking beneath !!
