I've done so much reading on it I'm now going in circles. I don't know anymore if it needs protein or hydration, and how I even work out how to find the right product!

When it was short, as a wee one, it was boingy curls, now it is long, the curls have pulled out and at best it is wavy. It is always frizzy. I want to help her get shiny hair and if there are curls to bring out, help them along.

It's a little bit rough if you run fingers backwards up a strand, which I believe means it could benefit from protein. But would need some moisture sealing in first too.

I keep standing in superdrug etc staring at the back of pots and bottles of shampoos, conditioners, trying to find the above. I'm bamboozled. Co washing, sulfates, silicones.

Please help me find a good routine for her! My hair is straight and smooth, nothing like hers so I'm stuck.

Gentle shampoo (no sulphates), then a moisturising thing, then protein (but not every day). Am I getting close?

Please could you recommend products? Ideally low cost and from superdrug/boots/bodycare. We are just starting out testing things.

Wavy hair with a tendency to frizz - have you tried just washing in just conditioner in just once a week

mrsplum2015 · 31/08/2022 14:06

It's really not too complicated. I have similar hair as does my dd.
Wash once a week max but every time you feel like it, condition in the shower and comb through then leave to dry naturally
Dd is 9 so every time she conditions I comb through and plait which makes life a lot easier !

Justkoko · 31/08/2022 14:13

But what are you washing with?!

Tresemme
Nothing special.

Is your daughter white or dual heritage?

I have hair like this. Caused no end of aggro growing up.

Tbh I've only just got a handle on it in the last year or so. It's now lovely and curly with springy curls

Alot of it is trial and error

Alot of places will advocate no shampoo but I never felt my hair was clean without shampoo so this is my routine:

Wash hair upside down
Elvive red shampoo
Elvive conditioner
Brush in the shower AWAY from head (not down) whilst wet and with conditioner in
Rinse out conditioner

Now here is the important part

Squeeze out excess moisture
Add curl jelly or gel or mousse whilst it is wet. Use the prayer hands method and scrunch up toward scalp
Then use a microfiber towel or t shirt
And plop on top of head for 5-10 min

Then can either leave to air dry but best results are from diffuser drying.

My recommendations for curly products:
As I am curl cream or
Cantu curl cream or
Hot pink Umberto gel

I've also tried boucleme which is lighter but I didn't like the smell of it.

Hope this helps x

Oh and NEVER EVER BRUSH when dry

Threelittlelambs · 31/08/2022 15:10

Never brush when dry
find a curly hairdresser and ask for a curly cut this will lift the curls
shmpoo and condition the ends and use leave in conditioner once dry
yes to towel drying

Justkoko · 31/08/2022 17:33

Omg the difference in your curls @Octopuscrazy
Her hair is not dissimilar to your first picture. White origin.
Have got the umberto curl jelly.

She tries the plopping in the evening but then sleeping on it pulls it all out. She ends up brushing it and tying it back. Will ask her to try and stop that.

Brush in the shower- with a wide tooth comb? A tangle teezer type brush, a denman original? Are knots a problem?

We've also tried a diffuser but it still seemed to blow about fine bits and make it fluffy. Maybe we were doing it wrong. Presume it needs to be fairly dry anyway.

Thank you! I can't quite believe it looking back now lol!

Denman D6 Shampoo/Shower Brush amzn.eu/d/1GcYwpC

This is the brush I use in the shower

At night, she should put it in a pineapple so she's not sleeping on it and if possible get one of those satin hair caps or sleep on a satin/silk pillow. That minimises breakage.

Then the next morning, she can just give it a spray to wet it and regel/ restyle if needed.

When I diffuse, it's usually wet and has product in it.

Oh I forgot to say, about once every 4-6 weeks I put olaplex no.3 on overnight

Hope this helps x

Thank you everyone!
@Octopuscrazy OK wash, condition with keratin treatment and scrunch in umberto jelly even when wet so much curlier!
Hair plopped and pineappled, fingers crossed!
Thanks, so much information out there gets too confusing.

She needs to wet it and scrunch it up again in the morning after she's washed it. There is no sleeping on curly hair (unless you're straightened it!).

I wet mine every morning, slather it in gel and then scrunch it up. Use a diffuser on low literally to just set the curls. Then leave it to dry naturally. Once it's dry, tip my head upside down and scrunch it all out.
