Do these shoes look ok for secondary school DS

Hello all,

So my eldest DS has something called Tibial Torsion, so he finds wearing leather types shoes very uncomfortable to walk in. So we went shoe shopping today and he chose these by DR martens. I purchased the shoes as after all the shops we visited, he found a pair that he liked. But I'm not so sure as it looks so plimsoles... what do you all think?
Should I return them?

They wouldn't have been allowed at ds's school.

Isgooglebroken · 27/08/2022 18:25

Canvas wouldn’t be acceptable at our high school. It’s specifies black, polishable shoes.

Have you looked on your school website at their uniform requirements?

rainbowandglitter · 27/08/2022 18:26

They wouldn't be allowed here but does your ds have a special allowance if he has a medical condition that means he can't wear leather?

Sunnydayatthepark · 27/08/2022 18:31

Wouldn't be allowed at my sons school.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 27/08/2022 18:36

Wouldn't be allowed in our school as they are canvas unfortunately. What you can do though is send a Drs not in to school and they can then give him a uniform pass if those shoes are for a medical condition. Our school would not do this without an official Drs note, same for toilet passes...trying to get a DR to write a note however can be difficult.

Glowinglights · 27/08/2022 18:38

They’d be fine at our school and loads of pupils wear them (but I’d think cheaper versions of the canvas shoe). So depends on uniform requirements of your sons school

WhatIsThisPlease · 27/08/2022 18:40

My DS has to have special insoles and we couldn't get them into leather shoes. School let him wear plain black trainers and he had a note in his blazer pocket to explain why.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/08/2022 18:42

They wouldn’t be allowed in our school

Wolfiefan · 27/08/2022 18:45

Check the uniform policy of the school. No point asking people who have no idea what the school policy is. It often specifies they have to be leather or able to be polished.

Ducksurprise · 27/08/2022 18:46

The price 😮

Also not allowed in my dc school, has to be polishable. However a doctors note would be accepted.

secular39 · 27/08/2022 18:50

I know the price is.... but I love dr martens shoes. My son used to have kickers and other sorts of shoes but he would ruin these by the end of half term. DR martens are indestructible so I often get these.

Check school policy ours can wear anything black. My son has black Nike 270s.

VerifiedBot2351 · 27/08/2022 18:53

No because they are canvas.

secular39 · 27/08/2022 18:54

Ok, I will check the school policy. It seems like a very relaxed school as there's a few kids who wear trainers. But do you think the shoes look a bit smartish?

OP posts:
mattressspring · 27/08/2022 18:56

Why do so many people buy things then ask on here if they are ok and o my then decide to check school policy?

OP checking the uniform standard is where to start, not end.

secular39 · 27/08/2022 19:00

It just says on the school policy 'smart black shoes or smart black loafers with no obvious designs"...

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 27/08/2022 19:00

It’s not up to us! And don’t rely on what kids wear. Sometimes some kids get away with wearing what they shouldn’t.

Wolfiefan · 27/08/2022 19:00

Canvas isn’t smart though is it?

Canvas shoes are not smart. They are casual. The uniform information is adequate.

Digimoor · 27/08/2022 19:05

Surely canvas means his feet will get wet when it rains?

FlorencePennnywell · 27/08/2022 19:06

They look absolutely fine to me OP. You'll need to double check with the school and fingers crossed they're relatively relaxed.

I'd also take some time next week to see how easy it will be to get a doctors note - if he has a medical condition, you'll be able to get a note - although you'll have to pay for this

My 15 year old has worn black Air Force 1s for a couple of years - and his school are strict on uniform!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 27/08/2022 19:07

The downside of canvas is that it isnt as protective during more practical subjects. Theyll be using hot water frequently in science which would not soak through leather (or leather imitation) shoes and slotted masses that can fall and land on their toes if not being careful. In DT theyll be being other similar risky things that could result in injury if wearing canva shoes.

yasminisa · 27/08/2022 19:07

They won't be allowed at my ds school.
Unless your child has particular sensory issues, I would get some good school shoes.
Are kickers allowed? They're usually quite good. Or ptherwise try M and S, or Next

carefullycourageous · 27/08/2022 19:08

My school allows any material so long as it is not an obvious sports trainer. These would absolutely be allowed at my school as all black Vans are allowed.

Your school is the one that sets the rules - it is pointless asking on here!

IMO they are smart enough, but every school is different (oh how I wish we had French school clothes policies).

secular39 · 27/08/2022 19:08

It's eco fiber material? Not sure if that particular fibre gets wet easily,
