What do you think about this dress for mother of a he bride?

Hi all. If I dress this up, would it be ok for mother of the bride? Also how to dress it up? It's the nicest thing I've seen and I felt really comfortable in it. However, not sure if it's "weddingy" enough? Many thanks.

I like this Hobbs silk one in the sale.

MuddlerInLaw · 27/08/2022 22:35

I’m about the same height, OP - I buy what I like and have things altered where necessary.

But here’s a shorter and less expensive dress that might also work well over velvet trousers.

Moggyd · 27/08/2022 23:01

Thanks @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie. I like the first one but couldn't open the others. @MuddlerInLaw that's beautiful!

I've found these in two different colours. Love the shape.

I do like the 40s style shapes.

Not dressy enough, IMO.

Kite22 · 27/08/2022 23:18

We also need to know what sort of a wedding it is going to be - traditional or not ?

Because people are saying 'not dressy enough' but we are assuming it is a dressy wedding, and not a 'call in the registry office in our lunch hour' or 'walk down from the Church to the local farmer's field' type wedding

Moggyd · 27/08/2022 23:36

@Kite22 it's a biggish wedding at a dedicated wedding venue so on the formal side. My dd is quite relaxed about what I wear but I do want to look the part. To be honest I have no idea what constitutes dressy enough for MOB. Are there any rules I can follow as I really can't tell the difference between a posh one and not posh enough.

Looking at the Next sire this looks nice.

A wrap dress is a very flattering cut for most figures. There's a few different colours, all of which look very suitable for Spring.

You could team it with a smart jacket which is sensible in Spring as it can be very hot or very cold and anything in-between at that time of year.

Nice shoes and a hair decoration would finish it off perfectly.

Bunce1 · 27/08/2022 23:56

Do not get one of those god awful 40s style dressss they make grown women look like giant cupcakes. Terrible.

Reiss might be worth a look? Some Bombshell for a sleeker 40s silhouette.

you want a premium fabric and a good cut.

Lineala · 28/08/2022 00:06

If you're open to it, have a look at Vinted. If you search for phase eight size 16, there sre some lovely shift dresses in scuba that come up and as the fabric is quite forgiving they look rather good.

Lineala · 28/08/2022 00:15

This is what I meant. They do the same style every year but a different print. They look lovely on.

My mum wore a dress from BHS when I got married (outing my age). It was not a typical Mother of the Bride dress but (a) she was comfortable, (b) it was affordable and (c) she had the opportunity to wear it again. I don't think it is necessarily right for a spring wedding because of the colours but please do not give too much headspace to those suggesting you need a much "dressier" (aka £££) frock. To be perfectly frank, not a single soul will remember what you wore anyway so as long as you are comfortable it will make not a jot of difference.

Lineala · 28/08/2022 00:15

That's a great call for a mob at a spring wedding. Perhaps a nice hat and wrap in case it's chilly 👍🏻

caringcarer · 28/08/2022 01:03

I think @Lineala has found you the perfect dress and the jacket makes it look so smart for a spring wedding. It is less than you wanted to spend and you could wear it again to any formal event. Do try it on and see what you think.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 28/08/2022 07:21

Most importantly OP , what colours suit you?

Love the velvet one (had very similar in about 1991 when I was tiny) but think it's too short for the occasion.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/08/2022 11:53

Sorry but I really dislike that pink Next one. And the Phase Eight one.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/08/2022 14:11

Ghost

Another Ghost. Both come in several colours.

Hobbs Doubt this will be to many people's taste, but I think it's rather lovely!

Arket Nicer irl than in the pic.

Lineala · 29/08/2022 14:29

Op when you try dresses on for the wedding get your partner or someone to take photos front and back. The reason being some dresses make you look fab in photographs and others really don't!

bouncydog · 30/08/2022 07:31

Phase 8 dresses do not fit short people IMHO - we look like one of the Bisto kids!

Amazon of all places often has a huge array of label dresses now. I bought a formal one for DD’s wedding from the US where they tend to cater a lot more for shorter people. Hobbs also do a range for shorter people. If you can stretch your budget you could get a silk shift style dress from Shibumi which a lot of MOB’s buy from.

RelaxHaveADrinkWithMe · 30/08/2022 07:39

I don't think the PPs comment about 1940s/50s dresses is very fair! They can look great I think, plus who cares as long as the person wearing it likes it???? (And maybe the bride, in this case)

OP check out Pretty Kitty, it has lots of vintage style dresses in modern fabrics and is very affordable. It has a few similar to what you linked l that could be dressed up but look comfortable.

I think this is a prettier version of your first dress?

This is nice and looks comfortable (see review photos)

I honestly could buy everything on that site but I do have a penchant for florals/patterns

gogohmm · 30/08/2022 07:56

Look on silk Fred, lovely dresses on there (or were a few weeks ago)

MuddlerInLaw · 30/08/2022 07:58

I will keep looking but really don't want the archetypal MOB thing but still want to look good.

This is what the OP said in her second post.

Perhaps I’ve misunderstood - because I’m frankly astonished at some of the suggestions here.

gogohmm · 30/08/2022 07:58

@Lineala

Lovely dress but only suitable if you are skinny! Scuba is a fabric you either like or not too
