Staying warm: how to do layering

Thinking ahead to the winter... Those of you that wear thermals, how do you layer them?

Eg do you wear long sleeved thermals under jumpers or thermal vests under normal tops? Does wearing 3 layers help.

And are merino layers much better than heatech etc.?

I work from home and I'm rubbish with the cold. 🥶

I always wear a vest Grin tucked in. Tuck everything in, it helps
If you Google waist warmers, I got one of those off Etsy which really helps, keeping your core warm is the important part as otherwise your feet and hands get cold
Feet in hard soled slippers. I don't have to be presentable though as nobody sees me so I'm often wearing a slanket or a heated throw

Found the link. It's really comforting for period pain too

Watching with interest as I could get better at this.

I have long sleeve M&S thermal tops (think called heathen) and wear them under shirts/jumpers. Wool jumpers are great. Merino or fake cashmere better than lambswool. Cashmere the best of all. But merino ace for machine-washability.

Warm socks helps. A scarf helps. Blanket over lap good when sitting at desk.

They say to wear tights under trousers, but I find that means I can't bend my legs! I find warm tights + skirts warmer than trousers anyway.

I just wear the m&s thermal vest under what i would wear anyway. Which for me was a long sleeve t shirt top and a jumper. I also had a shawl on stand-by which often went over my legs. I also had fingerless gloves.

Last year i was in an unheated office with the window open but it was a mild winter i guess. I hope i'm allowed to close the window this year.

I usually have merino wool vest, merino wool long sleeved shell top, cashmere or merino sweater plus neck warmer snood type thing and fingerless gloves. I also have a Lazypatch duvet suit which DH bought me for a camping trip. It's amazing for keeping you warm, not so good for making a fashion statement (unless the Michelin man is your style guru 😁).

Thanks for great ideas. Off to Google.

merino wool has antimicrobial properties, so it won't get whiffy as quickly as more synthetic fibres. You may well get more wears between washes with merino wool items. The flipside is that they will be more expensive than synthetic materials.

If you have access to a shopping outlet, check out the outdoors stores (trespass, mountain warehouse etc) as there are often good deals to be had on merino socks and base layers.
