Footwear for Rome?

MonsterMunchLady · 25/08/2022 20:43

Heading to Rome next month and mainly taking a selection of dresses (still nice weather in Sept and want to feel like floaty goddess, obviously 😊)

Only issue is everyone tells me how much walking there is with all the sight-seeing so I need a comfy pair of shoes. All my comfy shoes are non-dress friendly.

Does anyone have any ideas for trainers that are subtle enough to wear with dresses and also super comfy for 15,000+ steps?

Almost any white trainer can work with a dress. Supergas, white AF1 (v comfy but might be too bulky for your taste), Veja (not the comfiest). Or a pair of converse? Stan Smiths? Trainers with a dress is very normal now, almost the default shoe on people I see around.

When we went to Rome 2018 I took some white canvas trainers super comfy and then had flipflops/sandals for going out for dinner. Matched nicely with dresses, shorts etc. Make sure you have clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for certain tourist places or they won't let you in.

cherrypiepie · 25/08/2022 21:14

I love my teva sandals for sightseeing.

Failing that my Adidas boost sole trainers are like slippers with clouds of air.

RTHJ14 · 25/08/2022 21:19

I had white leather converse and Birkenstocks for Rome! Loads of walking and not a blister in sight xx

Dogsgottabone · 25/08/2022 21:21

I walked around Florence in the July heat in white leather puma trainers with a floaty dress.

Re the shoulders cover thing, in Siena we were given shoulder covers as we walked in.

I took sandals and converse for a May trip and it rained cats and dogs Grin I ended up buying a pair of AF1s but somehow they were higher and slightly more "platformed" than any of the ones I've had since. Was kinda glad though as they ended up being seriously comfy and went with everything I'd packed.

Rally Fitflops are incredible.

Thank you for all the replies!

Looks like white trainers it is - do we think they have to be super expensive to be comfy? (Certain brand, etc).

I was looking to pay £40 max, how realistic is this gor comfort? Do I have to plum for something like Sketchers and just fork out £60+?

I discovered these and have worn them every day this summer! The most comfortable shoes I have ever worn.

For context, I normally live in AF1s or Gazelles, but find them too hot in the summer, especially abroad.

These are a great solution - feel as comfortable as trainers, but lighter and more summery. I love them Smile

cherrypiepie · 26/08/2022 12:19

@MonsterMunchLady branded trainers are worth forking out for as I recently discovered!

Adidas with a boost sole are so comfy and mine were £40 from the outlet. Nike AF1 needs a lot of breaking in and I still don't find them comfortable.

I'd for for something more trainer looking than flat. People wear wearing regular trainers with dresses (not the ubiquitous flat white Stan smiths/af1/veja) there are some lovely Nike air max 90 of you have £125 Grin

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 26/08/2022 12:30

If you are considering converse/superga, converse are very narrow and superga are more forgiving on wide feet.

GettingStuffed · 26/08/2022 12:30

I like Reebok classic they're comfortable and I love the look of them

DontDoThatGeorge · 26/08/2022 12:37

JD sports have adidas superstars on sale for about £40. I find them v comfy.

thirstyformore · 26/08/2022 12:49

I went to Rome in April and only took my dr marten sandals. Super comfy. Did miles in them...mine are black but white would look good with dresses. https://www.schuh.co.uk/womens/dr-martens-voss-ii-white-sandals/1752261020/?store=&gclid=CjwKCAjw3qGYBhBSEiwAcnTRLlBM34S3SOz9KdLJbI9bdG5safbTurWsKWCMph1QTN5ZQEKoUu2xBoCLSEQAvDD_BwE

I love my Fitflop Rally trainers (on my 2nd pair) with dresses. well in fact with anything. I do have Nike 327's (navy and white) too and Mint Velvet trainers (black & stone) which I love and are all comfy but I always feel the Fitflops are the most unobtrusive off them all, so go well with most dresses. I wear lots of magic trousers, magic shorts, jeans and maxi skirts too, they are a good all rounder.

PS I have never done as many steps anywhere, as I did in Rome in a day!

TheWayoftheLeaf · 26/08/2022 15:34

Comfy sandals or trainers. It's uneven and cobbled so don't wear heels.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/08/2022 18:01

I went to Rome on May wore Converse High Tops , I do have stupidly skinny feet though , -I would agree Converse tend to be narrow and not good if your feet pronate (inward roll) as there's nothing in the arch .

Now you've got your shoes sorted you need to think about your bag.
We were warned to use cross body , keep the pockets towards you and there is a high risk of having the bag cut . Either the straps or they gut it like a fish .
We were in a tour group so everyone looked out for each other but something to bear in mind .

Enjoy ,
I would love to go back , (did the Trevi Fountain Coin Wish to make sure )

Ineedtoletgo83 · 26/08/2022 18:08

I wore my vionic sandals. Get something very very comfortable

Geamhradh · 26/08/2022 18:12

Another one for Fitflop Rally trainers. I had plantar fascitis and they helped cure it. Am on my 3rd or 4th pair now and am just back from Madrid and Lisbon. Last summer they saw me through Rome and Florence.

MonsterMunchLady · 26/08/2022 19:37

Thank you everyone! Think I'm going to have to abandon my spend limit and just go with whichever feels more comfortable during try on.

@70isaLimitNotaTarget Yes, I've heard about this, sadly 😔 Makes me very wary, in fact we almost decided again Rome after hearing such awful tales. Have made DH get a PacSafe cross body bag. Just hope it will do the job.

Other Rome Related Tips :
Nothing to do with Style or Beauty :

We were told to go to the toilet when the availability was there , not when we needed to Grin Obviously on a tour they knew where the loo stops were .

And marvel (if that;s the word) at the driving - I have never seen anything like it .
Every car had a dent or a scrape
And the parking ! OMG .

BuntyCollocks · 28/08/2022 08:03

To throw a spanner in the works - we were back in Rome for a day this year and did the major touristy bits with the kids, so lots of walking. My saltwater sandals were amazing and kept my feet cool - it was 38 degrees and others were suffering in trainers. Not a blister in sight for me.

TheEggChair · 28/08/2022 08:31

Any white trainer's or fitflops are my footwear brand of choice as they have inbuilt arch support.

Adidas Stan Smiths and selected trainers are 30% off RRP with the code SCHOOL
