Is it actually OK to wear white in autumn/winter?

For years now, there have been articles that tell us it's OK to wear white in winter and autumn. I can think of a few items that would look great--boot, jumpers, etc.

There's a dress in ecru denim I'd love but I don't want to spend money on it now if I can't wear it over the next few months. It's marketed as a summer dress, but is long-sleeved. People wear regular denim dresses in autumn and winter but I can't figure out if an ecru one would look odd.

I'm used to living in a European country where there are strict rules about what's appropriate and it almost gives me palpitations to think of purchasing an item that's officially for summer now! Can anyone tell me what a typical UK person would do? Thank you.

Where what you like when you like. Be the person people about because you are you and they wish they were more free to be like you

I would wear ecru jeans in autumn but only in town. If I wore them for walking the dogs, they would be filthy in seconds.

You could build an autumn palette of ecru, navy and red or orange.

Wear what you want when you want. These "rules" are bonkers.

SizzlerFizzler · 25/08/2022 15:08

I've certainly heard the phrase 'never white after Labor Day' but as I'm not American I haven't paid any attention to it!

The UK may not be as stylish as say France or Italy but I think the fact there aren't really any such rigid rules is very much in its favour. Anything goes really. I think your ecru denim dress would contrast beautifully with the grey dreariness of autumn/winter.

(Geri Halliwell exclusively wears white all year round if that matters at all Grin)

Just wear what you want.

Antst · 25/08/2022 15:12

Thanks very much, everyone. Yes, the rule about Labour Day is very much on my mind!

It sounds like you would wear white/ecru if it wouldn't get filthy, MintJulia. SizzlerFizzler, your post sounds like poetry.

OK, I'm going to do it!

Where I come from the rule about the white is more about dirt from the streets and rain. Basically when it rains / if there is water on the pavement, you'll have micro drops flying off your heels onto the back of your ankles. If the trousers / dress is long enough, it will get dirty no doubt. I am sure you can manage in ecru if it doesn't rain

but white of course brightens winter outfits immensely.

Paulineski · 25/08/2022 15:21

What nonsense. You wear what you want, where you want, when you want!

blobby10 · 25/08/2022 15:22

I would never wear white but that's because I attract dirt and would get smudges everywhere within 5 minutes of leaving the house!

As BogOffTraceyBeaker said, wear what you want when you want!! If it makes you feel good to wear a ballgown to work then do it!!! Fashion 'rules' were only created to sell more clothes.

Antst · 25/08/2022 15:26

Well, I just bought it. The ecru is less than half the price of the regular denim. You're all right though. I forgot that I usually avoid white because of coffee mishaps. Didn't even consider mud splashes. Still it's denim so at least stains won't ruin it!

I’d wear a white T-shirt any time. But probably not a white dress or trousers unless it’s summer.

It is true that if you wear white after September you will spontaneously combust.

Wear what you want!
