Wedding day essentials

I get married in a month, and I’m doing my own hair and makeup
I’m going shopping at the weekend for everything I need, please can you tell me your wedding day essentials
one of my friends has suggested a Chanel waterproof mascara
another has suggested Mitchum 😂

im particularly looking for a good moisturiser (normally I use one with spf but have been told not to) a good foundation
and any other general essentials to get me through the day

I’m not normally someone who wears much makeup, so I’m not even sure what’s needed
do I need things like blotting paper for example? Someone at work told me that’s vital!

thank you so much!

Honestly if you don't wear much make up you will be much better booking in somewhere to do it.

If not I'd go to a make up counter and as for a make over an buy what they recommend.

I'd just stick to the basics foundation, concealer, blush, mascara, brow pencil or similar maybe one shade of eyeshadow. I like eyeliner on my lower lash waterline but it a dated look.

I'd struggle with anything more than that. And I wear make up everyday.

Bobbi Brown, MAC, etc

Blotting paper is used for touch up throughout the day if you get a an oily sheen breakthrough the make up.

As above, book in with make up counter and ask them to suggest some things, try them on and get them to show how to apply and then buy.

I got a moisturiser from Jo Malone for my wedding day. It was expensive but one of the nicest ones I've had and the smell lasts all day as well so saved on buying a perfume.

You will need a good face moisturiser and a primer to help makeup last. Your liquid foundation, any bronzer, blusher or highlighter you may like and a power on top to set your face makeup. Eye wise, I didn't bother with a waterproof mascara because I knew I wouldn't cry. I'm not a cryer and I was a smiley happy rather than a cry-y happy. Do you wear eyeshadow? If so, I like Urban Decay as they are nicely pigmented and make sure to use a bit of primer here too. I've got oily skin so I avoided things like eyeliner pencil as I find it runs and smudges.

A setting spray once the face is done helps hold things in place too (please don't use hairspray as a setting spray).

Do trials before the wedding too. Just in your own home to see what you like. Also, I went into our local department store and spoke to a few of the concessions stands in the makeup section. I looked at brands I knew I could afford and discussed my requirements with their staff. Charlotte Tilsbury recommended a product over in the Dior section and I think I purchased something from both counters.

Are you getting professional photos? I'd also seriously consider trying to find a professional MUA, it'll look much better in the photos. By the time you buy all the bits you need you're probably going to be cheaper just paying a MUA anyway.

Setting spray
Nice perfume (I just used a sample from the counter)
Blotting paper
Decent deodorant

I’m also getting married in a month and I plan to do exactly the same makeup I do every day (brow pencil, SPF and benetint) and my own hair. It would stress me out trying to do new things. I will however think about what perfume to wear.
Sorry, not a very helpful response

It's not recommended to wear SPF as it shows up white on professional photos. Might be worth skipping it just for one day.

QueenOfWeeds · 25/08/2022 14:09

An intensive moisturiser/serum sheet mask for the day before. Obviously try out ahead of time to check you don’t come out in splotchy patches! My MUA suggested it - I actually did one the night before and one on the day, so my skin looked as happy as possible.

babyjellyfish · 25/08/2022 14:09

If you don't usually wear much makeup and you don't own things like mascara and foundation already, I would consider booking a makeup artist.

Otherwise, go to a makeup counter at a department store and see what they recommend, but you may end up spending so much on makeup that you might as well have booked a makeup artist.

Doing your own wedding makeup is one thing if you are already into makeup, have plenty of practice applying it and own products you know you like, but I wouldn't want to be learning from scratch a month before my wedding.

If hiring a professional isn't an option, do you have any friends or family members who are good with makeup and who might do it for you?

annoyedneighbour1 · 25/08/2022 14:22

Don't wear spf as you'll get a terrible white cast in the photographs

Pumpkinbite · 25/08/2022 14:48

When I say I don’t wear much makeup I mean my standard day is bb cream, blush and a drop of highlighter and lip balm

to go out I’ll add some light coverage foundation with spf and a tiny bit of contour

i do have basic makeup but since I’m saving on a MUA I’d be happy to treat myself to a better foundation or something
and I’m happy to pick up some extras that I’d need even if I had a MUA - things like the blotting paper recommendation.

i live in a tiny town and the only MUAs within miles are absolutely not the style I’d like for my wedding. I’ve been to one or two for other events before, and even one for a trial for my wedding and I end up absolutely caked in makeup like I’m in drag.

they all also do the same quite fashionable look that I doesn’t suit me. That’s even when I’ve told them I like to keep it natural.

thank you for the tips so far, particularly the serum mask, great idea

I find the Dior mascara in the silver tube is the best I have ever used as it does not smudge at all, it’s the most long lasting without leaving dark smudges like many do.
I also find the Dior forever foundation is lovely and easy to apply with great coverage, they do a matte one, a lightweight one and a glow one. I would go and ask for some help at the counter and they will recommend what is best for your skin.
I find that using a hylauronic acid under moisturiser is great for moisture and texture in the skin, the Inkey list one is reasonable price, and will improve the skin with any moisturiser on top. I like a Chanel moisturiser but also find the garnier hemp organic one lovely and dewy as well and costs a lot less.

Whataretheodds · 25/08/2022 19:02

Definitely moisturiser, primer, foundation, concealer, blush, contour stick or similar (something brown and something lighter) highlighter, eye pencil, mascara, eyebrow stuff, lip stuff, setting spray.
