Have I missed the boat on these camera bags with flat straps?

Upcoming birthday, in the market for a new everyday handbag. Up to £100, could stretch to a bit more if I really love it! Currently have a slouchy crossbody saddle bag type thing. I quite like the look of these more structured camera bag type things, with the colourful flat straps, but wondering if they are dated now?

I have a few in different colours from Oliver. Bonas. Love them .

I have this one by Coach and love it. Its very good quality. But I don't use it as my day to day bag; it's quite small.

Snap! I love it too.

I just bought this one which is a take on the camera bad but hopefully a bit more timeless

Have a look at Lucy in the Sky Boutique. She has a large range and is doing a discount for bank holiday weekend.

I rather like the Pom Pom ones as well. I’d buy one of them if I was in the market.

Elie Beaumont do some lovely ones for £89. I saw one a few months ago and wish I had bought one. I'm going to buy one online now.

You can order from here and it’s £60 for bag, original strap plus an extra strap.

I have this one. Bought the wide strap separately from Amazon as they didn't have the pink strap in stock. The other strap goes with another pink bag that I love but which had a broken strap so win-win. I quite like that this one is a bit rigid.

Great thread - I've been looking for one of these bags!

I have this one & swap out the straps depending on what I'm wearing (Oliver bonas)

You’ve not missed the boat they’ve been around for decades! I have a vintage LV version and it’s brilliant, very spacious yet compact. Great for city trips / sightseeing.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/08/2022 11:04

Something else to add is that you can often get the same straps cheaper on eBay. I made it a bit difficult for myself because I wanted one with silver hardware, but if not, the straps are generally under a tenner and look exactly the same as the ones that you can buy as an add on to the bag, generally for £25.

When I bought one of these bags a few months ago, I came to the conclusion that the 'naice' brands (Pom Pom, Meg and Bee etc) are all importing the same leather bags and straps from some mega factory somewhere, some putting their own branding on and selling them from their boutique website at varying price points.

QuietYou · 26/08/2022 11:11

It is common on these threads for people to post generic negative remarks about things the OP suggests but never actually say what they would wear.

In my head people who comment this type of thing are Edina Monsoon.

Zeeza · 26/08/2022 11:20

I don't think they are fashion forward. They are fairly safe and practical.

But I LOVE them. I have three, one black leather, one brown leather, one green suede. All with thinner matching straps.

I don't like big handbags. I can be hands free. They look neat and innocuous.

And yes, they go with my jeans and utility shacket type outfits. Which are safe, practical, comfy outfits.

If you aren't spending a fortune on one I can't see you can go wrong. I have other handbags for other occasions, but I'm happiest with my camera bag types.

ToooOldForThis · 27/08/2022 22:38

Oh these links and suggestions are great thank you, lots of brands i hadn't heard of. I like them more the more I look at them!

I love a camera bag, can’t justify buying another one but I do have a Pom Pom one in mind (in the shopping basket). Under £100 (unlike the Loewe puzzle bag!)

adhdforme · 01/09/2022 20:29

They're on their way out. Have been for about 6 months now. Yes they're still sold in shops. No, no one will throw rotten tomatoes at you for wearing one as plenty of people are still wearing them. But if you're looking for something fashion forward / on trend or with a bit more longevity then I'd give the camera bag style a miss now and invest in something with a top handle or shorter shoulder strap where the bag would sit elbow height

BakersYeast · 01/09/2022 20:43

I have had one for over a year now and got it for going on holiday to a European island. It was perfect for that but I couldn't get my normal purse in it so had to downsize. You can't get much in them though and I haven't used for ages. I do like the look of them though. They are fun and bright. I would now rather have one this size although have been using a big slouchy one all summer.

I have an Elle Beaumont one and I love it. Use it every day. I've actually just asked for another in a bolder colour for my upcoming birthday.

PaulineBrady · 01/09/2022 20:47

Look for Fogg camera bags on eBay. They don’t make them any more, but they are the best, and beautifully made.
