Foundation setting into fine lines

Watermelonjelly · 24/08/2022 19:05

I enjoy wearing makeup but my foundation keeps on setting into the fine lines on my skin and really emphasising them, it looks awful.

it happens on my forehead, between my eyebrows and my smile lines. I don’t have any wrinkles yet, I am in my twenties but my foundation sinking into my fine lines like this is really ageing - it’s making me look worse than without foundation on!

does anyone have any tips on how to stop this from happening? I already have a skincare routine which works well and my skin is in good condition.

thanks in advance :)

What foundation are you using? Is it the same one each time?
Do you use a primer?

Apply thin layers and build coverage.

MrsU2022 · 24/08/2022 19:27

Primer and consider using a different foundation that's less heavy!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/08/2022 19:29

Either a primer is needed or something like Nip+Fab Dragon's Blood Plumping Serum which will puff out the fine lines. It works well on the fine lines on my face and I'm in my mid 50s so I have a lot of them. I don't wear make up though so I'm not sure how well it works under makeup.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 24/08/2022 19:47

Apply however you want (fingers/brush/sponge) but the crucial step is to then buff it in with a brush.

SandieCollins · 24/08/2022 19:51

I’m not a foundation wearer so I bought some Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless something or other last week for a wedding. It’s amazing, doesn’t feel as heavy as foundation but looks lovely on so I imagine you wouldn’t have the same issue of it settling into fine lines.

I use either nars sheer glow or L’Oréal true match. I don’t use a primer, I just apply one la layer of the foundation then set using setting powder. I’m wondering if I could be using too much foundation, or if the setting powder is causing the issues? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks! Would love any primer recommendations - I have never used one before, my skin is normal/dry.

I was thinking of switching to a tinted moisturiser (maybe the nars one?) as my skin is fairly good, I just have some redness on my cheeks and dark circles which I like to cover.

Could be the setting power. I had similar issues with the nars sheer glow. I use the moisturiser now it works better for me.

Thanks for this - I’m off to have a google of the dragons blood plumping serum, never heard of it before!

I might try setting with the NYX dewy setting spray instead tomorrow and see if that improves things - I’m using the Laura mercier translucent setting powder at the moment, but maybe my skin just doesn’t like powders as it’s on the dry side..

ill be ordering the moisturiser tonight too.

Ahh I just use a beauty blender at the moment, then setting powder with a powder puff or brush. I’ll try buffing after the sponge, thanks.

Put primer on then dust some loose translucent powder over the primer before you put foundation on, game changer! X

This sounds intriguing! First thought is that it would turn into a big gloopy mess but I presume it’s a hack which makes foundation look better? I’ll try tomorrow morning and report back! 😊

I mix my Estée Lauder Double Wear with Clarins SOS Primer (colourless). Gives a nice glow, fairly fixed but settles less in fine lines.

Meltingsocks · 24/08/2022 22:19

Stop covering your lovely young skin in foundation would be easiest?

The beauty industry is disgraceful

TheOGCCL · 24/08/2022 22:57

Unless you particularly like foundation, or have lots you are trying to cover up, then a tinted moisturiser would probably work better. Nars Radiant one is good. Even if you are trying to cover things up, mask like, potentially quite flat and unnatural foundation is better replaced with applying foundation only where you need it, eg round the nostrils or cheeks if there is redness and blending it out.

Lottie2shoes · 25/08/2022 09:40

I would guess that it is the powder. If you have dry skin anyway then I would just give the powder a miss or use as minimally as possible.
Always use primer too.
I had this issue too, stopped when I completely missed out the powder.
So moisturiser, primer, then foundation. A bit of concealer if you need it.
Look after your skin in between too, moisturising as often as your skin needs it.
Should help

JimmiChoux · 25/08/2022 09:50

I have the sane issues, any recommendations for a primer please. Not used one before so I'm clueless.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 25/08/2022 09:56

Use fingers to work the foundation in. The warmth from your fingers warms the foundation and it goes on better over fine lines. Also, use thin layers, and go over one more time if needed, instead of staring with a lot of foundation.

Skip the powder and see how it goes without it.

it’s all trial and error. There are so many changeable factors here, no one can tell you exactly how to solve it. Depends on your skin, on the products you use, on the technique you use, even on the weather.

NoEffingWay · 25/08/2022 10:04

I use the nars tinted moisturiser for daily use, or a lancome bb cream and both are great.

I use a YSL foundation for when I want more coverage but that was trial and error. Estee Lauder double wear is so heavy I think it sits in my lines.

I always apply moisturiser before any face make-up and use an Estee Lauder primer before foundation.

Mummyford · 25/08/2022 11:03

If you like the colour of your current foundation, try mixing a bit into whatever moisturiser you usually use. I mix a dab of mine straight into sunblock (currently loving Ultra Violette Queen Screen www.net-a-porter.com/en-gb/shop/product/ultra-violette/beauty/serum/queen-screen-luminizing-skinscreen-serum-spf50plus-50ml/16114163150911162) and it gives the kind of coverage it sounds like you're looking for.

elm26 · 25/08/2022 17:35

@Watermelonjelly nope just a gentle light dusting of loose powder, in the places it settles into lines. For me I do it for that and on my nose where I tend to get oily. Finish with a setting spray when I'm done 😊

DottyPeacock · 25/08/2022 17:48

Do you use a hyaluronic acid as part of your skincare routine? It will plump up the skin. I use L’Oréal true match with a powder and I do have wrinkles and never have any issues with the foundation or powder settling in my lines.

I use hada labo hyaluronic, but plenty of others out there. You won’t need to spend too much on one.
